5B are feeling rested after the holidays and have come back to school refreshed and ready to make new discoveries. In our English unit we have been learning about the fantasy genre and we are working our way up to writing a first chapter of a fantasy novel. The students have been very knowledgeable on dragons, fae people, goblins and other fantasy creatures. Their character descriptions have left me amused.
In Maths we have finally cracked open our kent sets, and we are learning how to use a protractor and compass in our angle’s unit.
In Science we are looking at space. This is my favourite subject to teach and it is amazing to watch the students’ reactions when they find out new facts. Their minds were blown when we were comparing the sizes of different space objects, they couldn’t believe the size of other stars. Tomorrow we visit the star lab which is a giant inflatable dome where students learn about space through documentaries, experiments and stories. A big thankyou to Mrs Fennel for organising the Starlab incursion.

ANZAC DAY SERVICES 2022
On Friday, our student leaders led a very successful, moving ANZAC ceremony here at school. Overall, there was a high degree of respect shown by all students throughout the ceremony and as their parents/carers, you should all be very proud.
I want to extend an overall thank you to parents and carers who supported the students to attend the ANZAC Day services that were held in the local area on Monday morning. Again, the students marching on behalf of the school were very respectful and represented the school proudly. A special thank you goes to Ms Norris, Mrs Crapp, Mrs Smith-Ashton and Mrs Mastromonaco for supporting the students at the Dawn Service in Gladstone and Mrs Crapp, Mrs Smith-Ashton, Mrs Mastromonaco and Miss Williams for supporting the students at the Calliope Service.
A huge thank you needs to be extended to Ms Norris and Mrs Smith-Ashton who, in the background, put a large amount of time and effort into preparing the school ceremony on Friday morning and preparing the leaders and other members of the school community for participation in the ANZAC Day services within the community. Their tireless effort did not go unnoticed and it is very much appreciated. On behalf of the Calliope State School community, thank you!
Thank you to Mrs Marshall for the very engaging speech at our school ceremony on Friday and bringing to life, in a respectful way, the reality of what war means for some children and nations and how thankful we should all be about the country we live in. As the grandchild of a veteran who returned from World War II, you were correct in saying that the effects of war impact people right through the generations, including children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. This was a message that was shared at the local ANZAC services and services across the Nation. On behalf of the community, I would like to thank Ms Marshall for supporting and representing not only the RSL as the president but also the school at the Gladstone Dawn Service and our local ANZAC service on Monday in Calliope.
Another special thank you needs to go to Miss Williams for the work she did organising the Choir to sing at the ANZAC services both at school and the local Calliope Parade on Monday. The students sang beautifully. It was a touching tribute.

NAPLAN
Calliope State School will be participating in NAPLAN Online again in 2022. Calliope State School’s NAPLAN test window will be from Tuesday 10 May – Monday 16 May.
We are currently in the process of finalising student participation for the tests. Adjustments for students with a disability will be put in place to support their access and to facilitate maximum participation. All students in Years 3 and 5 are encouraged to participate. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in NAPLAN, please contact your child’s class teacher.
Please see the Calliope State School’s NAPLAN timetable below.
In Week 2 and 3, Term 2, students will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website: (https://qed.qld.gov.au/publications/reports/statistics/schooling/students/queensland-engagement-wellbeing-survey).
PUBLIC HOLIDAY
Just to communicate with parents/carers, next Monday’s public holiday, Monday 2 May, is the May Day Holiday.

Mother’s Day
As we all know the special women in our lives deserve appreciation and pampering! Mother’s Day is the perfect excuse to spoil our Mum’s and why not do it with a present already made up and in a gift bag? The P&C have put together packs for the students to purchase and gift to the special mothers in their lives. Attached is the flyer with all the pack information. Packs are $10 each and are available on QKR now. The friendly school office staff also have packs for purchase, and we will be doing a stall on Wednesday 4 May in the school hall for those students unable to purchase via QKR. We would appreciate some extra help running the stall on Wednesday 4 May, so if you have an hour or two to spare, please send a message to our Facebook page.
Also, congratulations to the 6 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 1.

Late Arrivals/Early Departures
We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out. These processes are in place so that the teachers and school staff are aware of the movement of students at school. This is for the protection and welfare of all students. It is important to look at the impact that late arrival and early departure have on a student’s education and those around them. It is not only disruptive to learning that is occurring in the classrooms at the time of arrival and departure, it is all time that accumulates to missed opportunities for learning. A student who is arriving late or leaving early by 15 minutes twice a week will miss, in total, the equivalent of 4 days of school across the year.
Packing healthy lunches for your child’s day
A healthy lunch box full of fresh food gives your child/children energy to play, concentrate and learn all day.
Ideal school lunches should include at least one item from each food group and also include water.
Encourage your children to get involved in the planning, shopping and preparation of foods for their school lunches, so they are more likely to enjoy them.
Please ensure your child/children have enough lunch packed to get them through the day and that they are also eating breakfast. We've found that students have been eating their lunches before school due to skipping breakfast then getting to lunch time and having no food to eat.
Breakfast is a great way to give the body the refueling it needs. Skipping breakfast can make kids feel tired, restless, or irritable. In the morning, their bodies need to refuel for the day ahead. Their mood and energy can drop by midmorning if they don't eat something for breakfast.
