NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK On Monday May 30 our staff enjoyed afternoon tea with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in light of recognising National Reconciliation Week (NRW). I would like to extend a huge thank you for all families that attended. It was great to interact with you in an informal way and watch the children happily playing and eating! In talking to the families, I shared a vulnerability with them, and I now share with you all, aligned to the ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ Reconciliation Week theme. I have not been brave and have not reached out to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in fear of getting it wrong or not meeting the cultural expectations. Monday’s afternoon tea was the start in turning that around and focusing on making change for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and families. In the background the Leadership Team have started building our cultural capability and working on CSS Reconciliation Action Plan. We will be sharing these strategies with families in the near future. |
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
The Calliope State School Athletics Carnival was held over 3 days last week. The students had an absolute blast! They thoroughly enjoyed getting outside and participating in the activities including races, shot put, and ball games. A huge thank you needs to be extended to Mrs Betts for the time and effort that she put in to preparing for the week and leading on the day. Our P&C also did a fantastic job of serving food to attendees on Friday. We thank all volunteers that gave up their time to support the school.
WEAR PURPLE FOR DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION MONTH – MAY 30
On Monday May 30, many of the staff and students wore purple and donated a gold coin to support in raising awareness about domestic and family violence.

On Wednesday June 1, we encourage our students to wear red, the colour that represents child safety, and donate a gold coin, as we acknowledge ‘Day for Daniel’. We are acknowledging this day early this year as we are lucky enough to have the Morcombe’s visit our school on this day. The Morcombe’s will provide personal child safety education to all of our students on how to stay safe from abuse and risk of harm.
Staff of the Week Leadership Award – Vic Brown
Vic has demonstrated our staff vision of working together throughout the semester so far. Vic has been working closely with the Leadership Team, Student Learning and Wellbeing Team and the Hub to look at different ways to support the engagement of students in the classroom, enabling them to learn. Vic has been persistent in his expectations of the students and following up with the students when they try to work outside those expectations.
Staff Member of the Week Peer Award – Marjorie Foster
Marjorie Foster is a true champion for lower school learning and support. She leads by her wealth of experience and broad knowledge and is first to share resources and support colleagues. Marjorie’s classroom is a wonderland set up for play based learning and interactive play which her students become fully engrossed in. She is a much valued staff member at Calliope State School and an invaluable Prep team member.
FINAL THOUGHT
A message from Calliope Police
As we are nearing the end of the school year, police would like to issue a friendly reminder that the areas marked in yellow on the below map are ‘No Stopping’ areas, which means that you can’t pull up and wait an extended period of time for a car to leave a car park or stop to drop your children off. These areas are clearly signed and marked with a yellow line.
Also a reminder that the Stop, Drop and Go area is limited to 2 minutes for the loading and unloading of passengers. Police have and will continue to issue fines for vehicles stopped along the yellow lines or parked in the Stop, Drop and Go area for an extended period of time. The maximum penalty for these offences is 20 penalty units (as of July 1, one penalty unit = $143.75) and can attract 3 demerit points.
To avoid the end of school traffic congestion, consider parking a bit further away and walking to collect your children or delaying pick up for 5 – 10 minutes. Remember school staff will be at Stop, Drop and Go until 3:30pm.
6A has been very busy this term in all subject areas.
We have read two awesome novels by the talented Elizabeth Honey and analysed her writing style. We have learned and applied the Order of Operations in Math as well as working with angles. Science has been a blast learning about natural disaster and in HASS we have studied the democratic process in Australia and how it has changed and progressed throughout history.
With only 4 weeks to go, we are almost half way through our last year at primary school and the year is flying by!

Congratulations to 1D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 6. Their attendance rate was 97.27% for the week!
Also, congratulations to the 2 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 6.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
This week’s focus is: Creating a positive classroom environment
Students will explore things that can negatively impact a positive classroom environment, while reviewing how teachers have created a positive classroom environment. This lesson is our focus because:
-Every student should be allowed to learn in a positive classroom environment
-Both teachers & students influence the positive classroom environment
-A positive classroom is one where students can learn & feel safe
Triangle Data
Exploring the Learning Re-Engagement Flow Chart
As stated last week, there are a number of steps followed by teachers to re-engage students, before calling the Student Learning & Wellbeing Team (SL@WT teachers) to assist.
STEP 1- Setting clear instructions
If students are aware of the expectations of their classroom, they feel safe, secure and comfortable in their classroom setting. They know what is expected and strive to
work positively in their classroom. Teacher’s can use these clear expectations to give regular positive verbal & non-verbal feedback to those following the expectations and can also use them to remind students who are not following them. While setting & revising these expectations, it is important to stay 100% calm, 100% of the time developing and maintaining a positive, safe learning environment.
Last Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon Calliope State School held its Junior Athletic carnivals. We had two fun-filled afternoons of sprints and athletic inspired rotational activities. Mrs Betts would like to give a huge shout out to the amazing Year 5 and Year 6 students who helped her out running stations at the carnivals. She was very impressed of the how confident and reliable the older students were. On Friday students in Year 3 to Year 6 participated in our school Athletics carnival. It was a great day of athletics and friendly rivalry between our house teams. Mrs Betts was very proud of the efforts and sportsmanship of all our students who took part.
The winning team of the day was Flinders. Fitzroy was awarded the Ball Games trophy for the carnival.
