NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

On Monday May 30 our staff enjoyed afternoon tea with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in light of recognising National Reconciliation Week (NRW). I would like to extend a huge thank you for all families that attended. It was great to interact with you in an informal way and watch the children happily playing and eating!

In talking to the families, I shared a vulnerability with them, and I now share with you all, aligned to the ‘Be Brave. Make Change’ Reconciliation Week theme. I have not been brave and have not reached out to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in fear of getting it wrong or not meeting the cultural expectations. Monday’s afternoon tea was the start in turning that around and focusing on making change for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and families. In the background the Leadership Team have started building our cultural capability and working on CSS Reconciliation Action Plan. We will be sharing these strategies with families in the near future.

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The Calliope State School Athletics Carnival was held over 3 days last week. The students had an absolute blast! They thoroughly enjoyed getting outside and participating in the activities including races, shot put, and ball games. A huge thank you needs to be extended to Mrs Betts for the time and effort that she put in to preparing for the week and leading on the day. Our P&C also did a fantastic job of serving food to attendees on Friday. We thank all volunteers that gave up their time to support the school.

WEAR PURPLE FOR DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION MONTH – MAY 30

DAY FOR DANIEL – JUNE 1

On Wednesday June 1, we encourage our students to wear red, the colour that represents child safety, and donate a gold coin, as we acknowledge ‘Day for Daniel’. We are acknowledging this day early this year as we are lucky enough to have the Morcombe’s visit our school on this day. The Morcombe’s will provide personal child safety education to all of our students on how to stay safe from abuse and risk of harm.

Staff of the Week Leadership Award Vic Brown

Vic has demonstrated our staff vision of working together throughout the semester so far. Vic has been working closely with the Leadership Team, Student Learning and Wellbeing Team and the Hub to look at different ways to support the engagement of students in the classroom, enabling them to learn. Vic has been persistent in his expectations of the students and following up with the students when they try to work outside those expectations.
