NAPLAN
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. It is the only national assessment all Australian students have the opportunity to undertake.
As students’ progress through their school years, it is important to check how well they are learning the essential skills of reading, writing and numeracy. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students are learning through the school curriculum and allows parents/carers to see how their child is progressing against national proficiency standards.
NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process. It does not replace ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, but it can provide teachers with additional information about students’ educational progress.
NAPLAN also provides schools, education authorities and governments with information about how education programs are working and whether young Australians are achieving important education.
Calliope State School will be implementing NAPLAN during the set testing window in Week 8 and 9 of Term 1. Below is the timetable:
There will be no NAPLAN testing outside of the dates and times listed on this timetable.
Further NAPLAN parent and carer fact sheets have been attached to this newsletter and sent home with all Year 3 and Year 5 students.
If you have questions about NAPLAN, please contact your child’s teacher or the school office.
Australian Curriculum – Version 9
In 2024, Calliope State School are implementing Version 9 Australian Curriculum English. Our teachers have worked hard with our Deputy Principal; Curriculum, Naomi Hughes, during 2023 to familiarise themselves with the refreshed English curriculum. During Term 4, 2023, our teachers planned for 2024 and are currently implementing their first revitalised English units of work.

Mobile phones and wearable devices
Queensland state school students are required to keep mobile phones and wearable devices switched off and 'away for the day' during school hours and while attending school activities, such as representative school sport, excursions and camps. At Calliope State School, students are to sign all mobile phones into the school office when they arrive at school and collect after school, before they go home. If wearable devices are able to be disabled (they cannot receive or make calls or texts during the school day) the smart watch is able to be worn as a watch for the day. If these functions cannot be disabled, the students will need to sign them in at the office.
As a parent or carer, you play an important role in supporting your child to engage with technology in safe and respectful ways. Parents can support schools to implement the 'away for the day' approach by:
- talking with your child about the requirement to have their phone switched off and away for the day,
- using the school's preferred communication method to contact your child during the day, such as phoning the school office
- encouraging your child to report to a staff member in the first instance if they become unwell or experience an issue during the school day
- raising questions about the school's local implementation approach with school staff
- establishing routines at home to help your child balance their use of devices and screen time.

4A have been working as a team to learn all sorts of concepts. In English, we have been diving into Traditional Asian stories. Students have enjoyed listening to and reading these stories, as well as identify word types in these texts.
In STEM, we have enjoyed practising our multiplication and learning about types of forces. We have been working on a carnival game in groups where we are learning about likelihood, forces and design, which links with our Maths, Science and Technology units. The students have come up with some fantastic ideas to make it harder to get the top prize, including adding more or less friction, more or less surface area or more or less push or pull forces.
Kagan Collaborative Learning and The Resilience Project are very much part of our classroom culture. These are referred to constantly in our daily routine. We have made a collage of all of the things we are grateful for and this is part of our GEM chats as well. Our emotional literacy took us on a hilarious journey using the Ipads to model and label emotions we know and new ones we have learnt. We are also about to start creating a tree of gratitude and success that will used to daily in our routine.

Congratulations to 6A who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 3. Their attendance rate was 96.52% for the week!
Also, congratulations to the 6 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 3.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.

The Resilience Project (TRP) supports young people to form evidence-based habits that will increase their capacity to deal with challenges, changes and stressors in the future.
The lessons (45 minute weekly lessons) in The Resilience Project curriculum are focused on four evidence based positive mental health strategies:
GEM-EL
G- Gratitiude
E-Empathy
M-Mindfullness
EL- Emotional Literacy
Staff at Calliope State School are also focusing on these four positive health strategies, imbedding a whole school approach to TRP.
Students from 5B enjoying The Human Knot game during their weekly lesson.

Student from 4/5D creating practical resources that can be used in their classroom to help with emotional literacy and regulation strategies.

4B students have been loving learning about the three GEM's and are bringing in pictures/ photos of things they are grateful for at home to add to our Gratitude Board(DIS Wall).
Hi everyone! Last night we held our first P&C meeting for the year. It was so wonderful to see everyone there! We heard from the Leadership team, our Grants Officer and our Communications Officer. The cohesiveness of our one big team is so wonderful and the students benefit from this immensely. We had a lot of discussion about future events and set about planning dates and details for an election sausage sizzle, Mother’s Day stall and other future fundraisers. We also discussed the excursions and camps coming up this year and pledged our sponsorship of transportations costs for these. Our next meeting will be our AGM which will be held on Tuesday 19th of March at 5pm in the Admin building. At this meeting all positions are vacated and nominations will be open for executive positions of; President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. As well as non-executive committee roles of; communication officer, grants officer and members of working groups for fundraising, tuckshop & uniform shop and road safety. Memberships will be accepted at the AGM also. If you have been considering getting involved and would like some more information on any of the above positions please reach out on the contact information below.
We are still seeking volunteers for the tuckshop. Here are some tasks that need to be completed through the stated times of the day. If you could spare any of these times on a Tuesday through to Friday (Friday is definitely our busiest day), please reach out as we would love to have you!
- 8:15-9:00am Breakfast Club; making cups of cereal & milk, pouring juice, cutting up fruit.
- 9:00-10:00am Basic food prep; cutting fruit and vegetables
- 10:00-11:00am Making up Snack and Custard Cups
- 10:30-11:00am Packing lunches into class tubs
- 11:15-Noon Washing dishes
You can put your name down for just one task at the time and day that suits you; then you’re out the door. All tasks are under the supervision of our wonderful Tuckshop Convenor, Lisa, so you won’t ever be thrown in the deep end without direction. We really do have such a great team, who are very welcoming and are always up for a laugh.
We can be contacted on communication.calliopess@gmail.com for our Communication Officer or pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au for our Executive team.
Warm regards,
Heidi, Geoff, Angela and Lisa.

School Zone Safety - advice for motorists
With school back, it's a timely reminder to drivers to slow down in school zones and pay attention at children’s crossings.
Coming back after holidays it can be easy to forget what to look out for. School zone signs are displayed as you approach the school and shows both the speed limit and the times you need to reduce your speed around the school. Childrens crossing are identified by children crossing flags, which are displayed near crossings before and after school hours.
When the crossing is supervised, you as a motorist must:
· wait until all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders have crossed the road and the crossing supervisor has returned to the footpath
· abide by the direction given by the School Crossing Supervisor.
If the crossing is unsupervised, you as a motorist must:
· give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a children’s, pedestrian or marked foot crossings
· give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on or entering a road you’re turning into
· give way to pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders on a slip lane
· give way to pedestrians in a share zone
· travel at a speed allowing you to stop safely at a crossing if needed
As a driver, it's important to make sure you give way to all pedestrians, bicycle or personal mobility device riders such as skateboards, e-scooters. You must also give way to pedestrians using a motorised mobility device such as a motorised wheelchair or a mobility scooter.
Some of our most vulnerable road users are children getting to and from school, so it’s important to slow down and abide by the crossing rules, as it won’t make much difference to the trip time, but it could very well save lives.
Visit the Street Smarts website to find more information about what to do at pedestrian and children crossings.
