Student Code of Conduct
The current copy that was signed off by the P&C at the end of 2020 is available for your perusal on our website: https://calliopess.eq.edu.au/supportandresources/formsanddocuments/documents/calliope%20ss%20student%20code%20of%20conduct%202020signed.pdf
We are currently in the process of reviewing and updating the Calliope State School Student Code of Conduct and I will be posting key messages and overviews in coming weeks. There will be opportunities to provide feedback.
The Purpose of the Student Code of Conduct
Calliope State School is committed to providing a safe, respectful and responsible learning environment, recognising the rights and responsibilities of students, staff, parents and visitors.
The Calliope State School Student Code of Conduct sets out the responsibilities and processes we use in our school to promote a productive, effective whole school approach to discipline.
Its purpose is to facilitate high standards of behaviour from all in the school community, ensuring learning and teaching in our school is prioritised, where all students are able to experience success and staff enjoy a safe, supportive workplace.
Disciplinary Consequences
There are 5 key procedures (see below) that schools are required to access when managing student behaviour in Queensland state schools. This suite of procedures, and associated forms and guidance materials, underwent a comprehensive review in 2019. A range of stakeholders were consulted as part of the review process, including teachers, principals, parents and students.
Key Procedure: Student Discipline
The Student discipline procedure sets out the responsibilities and processes to promote safe, supportive and disciplined learning environments in Queensland state schools. The procedure is informed by Chapter 12 Good order and management of State educational institutions and non-State schools of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.
Disciplinary Consequences
Guidenance on the application, where required, of disciplinary consequences are provided by the Department of Education.
Supportive discipline is an important part of the work undertaken in schools each day to help students develop and extend their capabilities in self-management and personal responsibility. The focus for teachers is on implementing proactive, preventative approaches that facilitate student growth.
At times, disciplinary consequences may be used as part of a student’s educative process. The role of disciplinary consequences is to assist students to understand behavioural expectations and to learn more acceptable ways of interacting and engaging with others.
Disciplinary consequences may include in-class responses managed by the teacher, such as verbal reprimands, restatement of rules or expectations, reminders and practise of routines, restriction or removal of in-class privileges, behaviour monitoring systems, time out, detention and communication with parents.
For persistent or more serious behavioural incidents, other within-school disciplinary consequences may be implemented, such as temporary relocation to a 'buddy' classroom, individual review meetings with nominated staff person (e.g. Guidance Officer, Head of Department), and/or intensive support options.
Prior to making a decision about the suitability of any disciplinary consequence, the principal will consider the individual circumstances of a student. This will include their behaviour history, disability, mental health and wellbeing, religious and cultural considerations, home environment and care arrangements. There are no mandated consequences used in Queensland state schools, each individual student case is considered and determined by the principal based on the particular circumstances.
Suspensions, exclusions and cancellations of enrolment are used as a last resort option by principals, after considering individual circumstances, the actions of the student and the needs and rights of other school community members.
Stop, Drop and Go

Reminder: The safety of our students is a priority at Calliope State School; please be patient when using Stop, Drop and Go. Please do not park in the Stop, Drop & Go Zones at any time as this congests the flow of traffic and blocks access to the kerb. The concrete centre island outside of the school is not a parking area or a Stop, Drop and Go Zone. Please do not use the concrete centre island as an area to drop off your children.
Some key points to remember:
- Stay in your car and leave the car running so that you can move forward (this maintains a steady flow of traffic).
- Keep left while queuing for Stop, Drop & Go.
- Children must enter and exit cars from the kerb side only.
- Give way when exiting the drop zone.
- In the afternoon, delay your arrival to minimise traffic congestion.
- If your child is not yet at Stop, Drop & Go, drive slowly through the carpark and turn right just before the exit to re-join the queue.
Early Collection of Children from School
Updated procedure: Please come to the office to sign you child out. You will be given an ‘Early Departure Slip’ and will then be required to go to your child/ren’s classroom to collect them and take them home.
Kind Regards

Principal
I am so lucky to work with every wonderful student at Calliope State School. There are so many smiles that brighten up our space. This term, we have fitted in a lot, learning about our health and wellbeing with adventure, competition, co-operation and most importantly; fun. Here are just a couple of activities that happened so far.
Year Five dug for historic artefacts buried “way back” in 1972. They have been learning about the influence of people and places on identities. Lots of letters told us about our past students and how so many things are different in our education.

Many grades have been working with the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and we learnt about the importance of eating a range of foods from the five food groups. I hope students are remembering to eat a range of fresh food and colours for the nutrients and vitamins our bodies need.
Year 6 measured and found out that a lot of sugar and sodium goes into some of our drinks.
Year 4 learnt how to get energy to skip well in their skipping competitions. They robbed the nest for a healthy and balanced breakfast from all 5 food groups.
It has been great fun finding ways to be healthy and active with everyone!
Kind Regards
Mrs Mastro.
Congratulations to 6C who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 7. Their attendance rate was 97.5% for the week! Also congratulations to the 10 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 7.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Gladstone STEM Cluster Robotics Competition Results

While not all teams returned with an award, all of the Calliope State School teams represented their team and the school with gracious professionalism and have walked away from the competition with a little more experience under their belts. A huge thank you to the coordinators of the Gladstone STEM Cluster Group for inviting Calliope State School to participate for another year and to the Industry Mentors from the Gladstone Region who provided guidance to the teams on the day of competition. The Giant Sweet Potato! On Thursday, Aaliyah and I found a massive, sweet potato growing in the school vegetable patch. Mrs C and I measured the sweet potato and it was 28cm long and weighed over 1kg. On Friday we roasted some of it and today we are making sweet potato soup. The sweet potato tasted delicious.
