Year 1 have been exploring sound in Science this term. We have had fun investigating how vibrations work and playing lots of musical instruments in different ways to change the pitch and volume. In the coming weeks we will be creating our own musical instruments.
Welcome to Week 5!
Key Messages - School Review – November 11 to 13 - Year 6 Graduation – December 7 - Feedback Welcome |
School Review – November 11 to 13
On the 11-13 of November we will welcome our School Review Team from the Education Improvement Branch. The School Review Team will talk to our school staff, the P&C and will also engage with parents at pick up times in afternoons or may call.
Year 6 Graduation
We are very excited, with the easing of restrictions, to be able to hold Year 6 Graduation on Monday, December 7 from 5 – 6pm at Calliope State School. This event will be held outside on the grassed area outside the Undercroft near the main Administration building. A maximum of two adults will be allowed to attend from each family. Please, no children other than the graduating students can attend this event. Parents, guardians or adults attending the event will need to have registered with the CSS Year 6 Graduation event with Eventbrite. We envisage this ceremony will take about one hour. In the unfortunate event of rain/storms on this afternoon, the ceremony will be moved to an indoor event the next morning in the hall with no parents/carers able to attend. This difficult decision has been discussed and approved by our P&C association.
Student Code of Conduct – Parent Consultation
Thank you to all the parents and carers who have attended the afternoon parent sessions. This input from our community is invaluable to the process. The next opportunity for parent consultation will be at the P&C meeting on November 10 at 6pm.
World Teachers’ Day
Thank you to all our amazing teachers for their dedication to the teaching and learning of every Calliope State School student. We also thank the P&C for the lovely gifts.
Day for Daniel
Thanks to everyone for their support of Day for Daniel and the donations made through QKR. Thank you to the P&C for organising to collect the donations through QKR.
Feedback Welcome
Calliope State School is committed to ensuring that ‘everyone at Calliope State School is working together to ensure that every day, in every classroom, every student is learning and achieving’. We want to know from our parents, carers and students, what we are doing well, and if there are any areas we can improve on or do differently. You can give feedback at any time to a staff member, coming into the school office, or leaving a message in our Suggestion Box (in the office foyer). Please be respectful when providing feedback.
If you have a complaint we ask that you:
1) Arrange a time to speak with the class teacher as the first point of call.
2) If your concern is regarding the classroom teacher or a staff member, contact the office to speak with a Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s sector.
· Miss Raelene Norris is the P-2 Deputy
· Mrs Naomi Hughes is the 3-6 A/Deputy
· Mrs Rebecca Crapp is the A/Principal.
We ask that you refrain from using social media platforms to comment about issues or incidents involving our school. We have a great school with great students and staff and together we can continue to promote our school as a fantastic learning venue in our community.
Kind Regards
Naomi Hughes
A/Deputy Principal
Message from the Queensland Police Service Parking on the grassy patch on the Dawson Highway near the pool along the yellow line is unsafe. Not only does it obstruct driver’s views when exiting the school carpark near the pool, it also causes further congestion along the Dawson Highway. The following applies: Code 2089 - s169 - Stop contrary to continuous yellow line -$53. Alternative parking is available along Welsh Street and on the large grassed area east of the school between the school and the church. |
PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning)
Week 5 is upon us and we’re almost at the halfway point of Term 4. The PBL lesson this week is on: Respectful – Use Respectful Language. At Calliope State School one of our core expectations is on Respectful behaviour and this is why we are focusing on using Respectful language. Unfortunately, television and social media has led to an increase in rude and disrespectful language in children’s lives, which is why we take the time to counter this with reminding them to use respectful by:
- speaking politely with all staff members;
- speaking politely with their fellow students;
- raising their hands to ask a question or speak;
- saying “please” and “thank you” when speaking; and
- using kind words over mean ones.
The more we reinforce polite and respectful language with students, the more we can help them create and maintain good relationships at school.
Don’t forget to let your kid/s know about all the cool Active & Engaged activities on a break time. Whether they want to play netball, chill out colouring in and watching a movie, or learn to dance, there is something for everyone. Here are the events:
Fantastic Fun Friday is on this week so be sure to encourage your child/children to get their Stamp Charts in. RotaKids have decided the events will be: Prep-2 Disney movie and colouring in the hall and Years 3-6 Skipping challenge.
NOTE – Prep to 2 will NOT be a dress up, instead kids will be watching a Disney movie in the hall and doing Disney colouring in.
Thanks.

On Saturday, two teams represented Calliope State School at the Gladstone Regional Robotics Competition. This competition consisted of 18 teams, with primary schools and high schools competing against each other. Throughout the day, teams had three chances to run their robot on a competition mat and complete as many missions as possible in two and a half minutes. Each run was scored, with the best score being the one that each team kept. Teams also had to present a Design Project that had been researched and developed prior to Saturday. The goal of the Design Project was to encourage more people to be active through play. 18 teams, 10 trophies and Calliope State School walked away with 2 of those trophies!!

Our Silly Sporty Skittles (SSS) team won the Innovation Project Award for their Design Project. The SSS team designed a safe play space to promote inclusion of all students. The space included a purpose built table that allowed a wheelchair to be pushed in. The table guarded the person in the wheelchair from being bumped. The purpose of the table was to promote inclusion. The area also included a game for hand eye coordination development which promoted being active and having fun with friends. The inspiration for this design project came from one of our own student’s situations. How very caring of the SSS to be aware of issues within our own school.

Our RoboTRACKS team won the Robot Design trophy. To successfully complete the chosen missions, the students had to design and make attachment for their robot that would move the required parts on the competition mat. The attachments needed to be functional and quickly swapped out for another within the two and a half minutes. RoboTRACKS not only earned themselves a trophy but have also received an invitation to Brisbane for the National Championships!! We wish them luck in their next competition.
We would like to thank the parents for supporting their child and allowing them to practice at school on weekends and outside of school hours during the week. A huge thank you also goes to our four coaches, Mrs Kelly Sellin, Miss Rebecca Wriede, Miss Jade Randall and Mrs Kylie Kettle for all of the time and dedication they have given to the Robotics teams.

Another election done and dusted, and we would like to thank the Calliope community for stopping in for some food and drinks at our Democracy BBQ. After a year where we haven’t been able to hold any events, it was good to get out into the community and see lots of familiar faces. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support from our Administration Team and our P&C members so we thank you also.
