Robotics' Report!

On Saturday, two teams represented Calliope State School at the Gladstone Regional Robotics Competition. This competition consisted of 18 teams, with primary schools and high schools competing against each other. Throughout the day, teams had three chances to run their robot on a competition mat and complete as many missions as possible in two and a half minutes. Each run was scored, with the best score being the one that each team kept. Teams also had to present a Design Project that had been researched and developed prior to Saturday. The goal of the Design Project was to encourage more people to be active through play. 18 teams, 10 trophies and Calliope State School walked away with 2 of those trophies!!

Our Silly Sporty Skittles (SSS) team won the Innovation Project Award for their Design Project. The SSS team designed a safe play space to promote inclusion of all students. The space included a purpose built table that allowed a wheelchair to be pushed in. The table guarded the person in the wheelchair from being bumped. The purpose of the table was to promote inclusion. The area also included a game for hand eye coordination development which promoted being active and having fun with friends. The inspiration for this design project came from one of our own student’s situations. How very caring of the SSS to be aware of issues within our own school.

Our RoboTRACKS team won the Robot Design trophy. To successfully complete the chosen missions, the students had to design and make attachment for their robot that would move the required parts on the competition mat. The attachments needed to be functional and quickly swapped out for another within the two and a half minutes. RoboTRACKS not only earned themselves a trophy but have also received an invitation to Brisbane for the National Championships!! We wish them luck in their next competition.

We would like to thank the parents for supporting their child and allowing them to practice at school on weekends and outside of school hours during the week. A huge thank you also goes to our four coaches, Mrs Kelly Sellin, Miss Rebecca Wriede, Miss Jade Randall and Mrs Kylie Kettle for all of the time and dedication they have given to the Robotics teams.
