The 2020 school year is off to a flying start. Remember that “EVERYDAY COUNTS”. It has been amazing to be out and about visiting all the classrooms. Our students have been working hard making a difference to their own learning. The level of engagement in their learning has been outstanding. Well done Calliope State School students for your amazing start to the year and also to all our parents and carers for ensuring a smooth and successful transition back to school. This year we are have ACE students at Calliope State School. ACE stands for…
A – Attending
C – Confident
E – Engaged
As we continue our reading improvement journey, we encourage parents to talk about being an ACE student with your children. Should you feel there are any concerns around these three areas, please feel free to organise a meeting with your child’s teacher so we can discuss ideas together on how to best support them.
STOP, DROP, GO
A massive thank-you must go to all our parents who have been using our STOP, DROP, GO area. The afternoon pick-ups are running smoothly and we appreciate the feedback people have been providing. We have been explicitly teaching our students the new process and have also posted a video to our Facebook page so that we all know how it works; keep sharing the message!
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Calliope State School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school. We often get asked what this means. This philosophy is a data based approach to supporting behaviour and is scientifically based.
PBL is based on the principles of positive behaviour support, which are applied at the whole school level. Positive behaviour support places emphasis on the belief that all children can learn. It takes an instructional approach to behaviour, where expected behaviours are explicitly taught and students are acknowledged for meeting expectations. Behaviour problems are seen as behavioural errors, and adults work together to develop strategies which will allow all students to participate and succeed.
Another key feature of positive behaviour support is the provision of a continuum of supports and interventions, depending on the needs of groups and individuals. Support is child-centred, involves families and is culturally and contextually appropriate. Students are taught academic and social skills in tandem, including the necessary social-emotional skills needed for school achievement and successful participation in the community. The ultimate goal is for students to become independent, reach their full potential, and lead fulfilled lives. (Taken from our Department website). At Calliope State School we partner this with Trauma Informed Practices to best support the needs of our students.
This year we are also introducing “You Can Do It” and “Zones of Regulation”. These tools will provide students with skills to support their own wellbeing and to be successful in their ability to interact with others.
If you have any questions around managing student behaviour at Calliope State School, please feel free to arrange a meeting with your Deputy (P-2 or 3-6) or our Student Welfare Teacher, Mr Rowe.

Feedback
We are always open to feedback as this helps our school to continuously grow and improve. There are many appropriate ways to provide feedback to our school and we appreciate the time and effort people have taken to ensure they are using these avenues. They include our surveys, participating in the P&C, organising a meeting with the P&C representatives, attending the PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) meetings, organising a meeting through our office, written communication via the school email addresses or a phone call.
Kindest Regards,
Rebecca Crapp
Deputy Principal

We are off to a great start in 6A!
We have two teachers this term! Miss Williams joins us from Curtin University, doing her final internship before she becomes a teacher. She has been sharing her love of music, dance and yoga when we need a brain break. 6A love our safe and positive learning environment, where we can identify and communicate how we are feeling using the Zones of Regulation by going to a regulation station if required. These are two spaces in the classroom, full of activities that help us look after ourselves when we need a 5 minute break. We love doing some yoga when we feel very energetic, and need help focusing. There’s also a relaxing, “quiet space” for when we need some time to ourselves and are struggling to focus in the classroom setting. 6A are already well underway with our English unit on ‘Short Stories’ and have been looking at language features, plot, themes and characterisation. Science had 6A exploring a type of goop to identify the state of matter that it was. It’s been a very busy start to the term.

WEEKLY POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING!
Welcome to week 2 in term 1. The Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson this week is: Safe – Lunchtime routines. At Calliope State School we play before eating so that our bodies are rested and calm before they go back to class to engage in learning. We also have designated areas for students to play in, so we don’t have big kids playing with the little ones and perhaps being too big for their games. When speaking to your child about lunchtime routines, please emphasis:
- We make sure we take a hat out to play so that we are safe from the sun;
- We walk on the concrete before we get to the oval;
- All students stay in their designated area;
- And we go to the toilet and get a drink when instructed by our teachers.
Please take a moment to go over these routines with your child/children.
For those new to the school, every three weeks we celebrate student behaviour with an event called Fantastic Fun Friday. If your student fills in their Stamp Chart for displaying Safe, Respectful and Responsible behaviour, they will get to come along and join in the fun. Below are some pictures from last years events.
Enjoy your week.
Thanks.

Congratulations to Prep B, 1D, 3A, 5B, 5C, 5D who had a brilliant attendance rate for Week 1. Their attendance rate was 100% for the week! 2020 has also started with 13 classes on 98%. In addition, congratulations to the 26 classes, who were at or above our school attendance, target of 94% for Week 1. Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
WELLBEING PRIORITY - WHAT'S NEW AT CALLIOPE SS?
'You Can Do It' Program
The ‘You Can Do It’ (YCDI) Education Program for children is a whole school approach to social and emotional learning. It was developed in Australia at the University of Melbourne by psychologist Professor Michael Bernard. It has been used extensively in the US, the UK and across Australia.
We are implementing the YCDI program as part of our Wellbeing journey. The program will teach your child a number of different skills that he or she should know in order to be happy and successful in school and experience positive relationships.
YCDI! Education Parents contains the latest information on positive parenting and how parents can support their children's success and happiness.
The five core social and emotional skills taught in a variety of ways in YCDI are:
- Confidence
- Persistence
- Organisation
- Getting Along
- Resilience
YCDI helps students develop 12 positive Habits of the Mind (e.g., self-acceptance, high frustration tolerance, acceptance of others) and eliminate negative Habits of the Mind (e.g., self-depreciation, low frustration tolerance, lack of other acceptance) as well as teaches students how by changing their thinking, they can influence their emotions and behaviours.
The program plays an important role in daily life at our school. You can learn more about this program and check out the valuable parenting resources on the following websites http://www.youcandoit.com.au/ , youcandoiteducation.com.au/parents
Calliope State School is a ‘YOU CAN DO IT’ school!
YCDI! Education Parents contains the latest information on positive parenting and how parents can support their children's success and happiness.
YCDI Parents covers three main areas:
- Positive Parents - How to be a positive role model, manage stress and enjoy parenting.
- Effective Parents - Skills for effective discipline, motivation and relationship building.
- Positive Children – How to develop children’s resilience, confidence, persistence, organisation, getting along skills, positive attitudes and values of good character.
YCDI! Parents offers a large number of E-learning programs for parents on ‘best’ practices of parents, and E-learning video and audio E-learning programs for children and adolescents that help build a variety of personal and social skills and positive attitudes.

Organisation - Setting Goals
ORGANISATION
Organisation is a very broad, embracing foundation that underpins success in many aspects of life. Planning for a successful trip provides us with a good metaphor to demonstrate the key elements of organisation:
- Destination (goal)
- Road Map (time management)
- Transport (the materials and a place to work)
Program Achieve is designed to increase student awareness of the important elements of organisation. Goal setting is one such habit practised at school. Research indicates that students who set goals tend to be more committed, make more of an effort and learn to monitor their own learning progress and as a result, achieve better than students who do not set goals. Goal setting is quite straight forward.
‘Good Goals’
It has been found that the most effective goals for students are:
- Moderately challenging
- Concrete/Specific (e.g. a particular task to accomplish or a score to achieve in a test )
- Short Term ( one to two weeks)
The more such habits can be reinforced, both at school and at home, the more effective and ‘automatic’ they will become for students. So what can you do to help? Here are a few suggestions to help develop your child’s organisation skills.
- Set goals yourself and share the success or otherwise of them with your children.
- Set up a list of morning or afternoon routines for kids to follow, which are age specific, on the fridge and organise small rewards when goals or responsibilities are achieved. A realistic expectation might be Prep-2 students having two responsibilities before and after school while those in Year 3-7 can work on three tasks. These tasks, which can take 10 to 15 minutes to complete, help children, learn organisation skills.
- Organise a quiet, well-lit space for your kids to complete homework.
- Insist on the ‘pain before pleasure’ motto. This ensures that homework is completed before any playtime.
- Use some behaviour specific feedback when you catch your kids being organised, such as:
- I can see you are intent on achieving your goal.
- without goals, it is harder to do your best.
- I see you have all your things ready. You are planning ahead.
Communication books, diaries and reading logs are all tools that help kids to be prepared. With all new learning come some hiccups. Keep persisting and insisting on your children being organised at home and at school. We urge you not just to read this but actually be proactive and do it with your children.
You can do it!
Do we really believe this! This year as a school community we are doing a collaborative approach to helping inspire and ignite healthy social-emotional wellbeing in us all!
Often the metaphor of a castle is used to represent the potential of an individual. The castle is so big it will take a lifetime to explore. Exploring the castle requires the opening of doors. Opening a door involves attempting something new or at a new level of challenge. There are doors in all areas of life, including the academic, social, physical, cultural and spiritual.
There is amazing potential in each one of us just waiting to be discovered, to be opened up. I’m not going to say it will be easy, yes it may mean a bit of effort or hard work on your behalf. But hey, just think of the amazing outcome as you discover the new YOU! So in the year ahead we are going to be exploring some of the keys to unlocking our potential in life such as confidence, persistence, resilience, trust, respect, commitment, responsibility, consideration of others, self-acceptance, forgiveness (to name a few).
I hope this will spur you to action, break down walls of unhealthy thinking and encourage your heart to unlock the full potential that has been hiding away in each one of you.
So let’s move forward with 2020 being a year of ‘Breakthrough’. Let’s see what amazing changes we can make not only in ourselves, but also in the lives of those around us!
Food for thought:
If Success was guaranteed...and you knew you wouldn’t fail... What would you do?

Message from the Principal Dear Parents & Caregivers I am writing to update you on the Novel Coronavirus. As you would be aware, the Australian Government has announced new measures that specifically address travel restrictions from mainland China. While there remains a very low risk of transmission in Australia, these preventative measures are being instigated in the interest of public health. I do not expect that these travel restrictions will have any major impact on our school operations and I want to assure you that we will continue to work to ensure any disruption is minimised. Our school will be open this week as usual as we progress through Semester 1 2020. As always, the health and wellbeing of our students remains our number one priority and I would ask that you remain alert to your child’s/children’s wellbeing during this time. Children can have a range of reactions during an event like this and, as always, teacher and guidance support is available. If you have any concerns, please discuss them with your child’s teacher. We continue to take advice from Queensland Health and the Department of Education in relation to this matter and the latest information is available at Novel Coronavirus on the Queensland Health website. Queensland had already announced and enacted restrictions last week for travellers who had visited China (including Hong Kong), and I reiterate this earlier advice from our health agencies, which remains current:
On a personal level, can I ask that as a school community we all look out for and support each other during this time. Again, thank you for your understanding and attention to this important matter. Regards Mark Wright Principal |
Welcome to 2020 - From Calliope State School P&C
We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Calliope state school. As P&C you will often see us around school, don’t hesitate to grab us and say "Hi". We are always happy to help.
Who are we?
Our committee consists of volunteer parents of the school and we are always looking for new helpers to assist with the running of the committee, fundraising events throughout the year, uniform shop and tuckshop. Ultimately, we are all parents who enjoy being involved in our children’s school.
What do we do?
Calliope P&C is a not for profit organisation that assists the Calliope School and its students by helping fund for large item purchases, purchasing music and sporting equipment, subsidise buses for excursions and the running of both the Tuckshop and Uniform Shop.
Our P & C needs the help of all our families to assist with raising funds to support our school and its students. Whether it’s selling raffle tickets, sizzling sausages, sorting pies at a Pie Drive, or helping behind the scenes. We greatly appreciate any time you can give us.
Please fill in a membership form so you can be added to our email group. We use this email group to send out notifications for events, volunteer rosters and meetings minutes. You don’t need to attend meetings to assist, just an hour or so of your time to help at events is all we need. Please consider volunteering your time to join our team, it is very rewarding to see your hard work in the happy faces of the school’s students when they have cold lunchboxes or new home readers.
For more information, please contact our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CalliopeSSPandC Or email us at pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au
We can’t wait to meet you.
Your P&C Team
Melissa, Tenielle, Bec and Kate
