Every state school in Queensland in 2020 is required to have a Student Code of Conduct, which will replace the school’s existing Responsible Behaviour Plan, Statement of Expectations and Code of School Behaviour.
It will be the school’s behaviour policy outlining expected behaviour and responses and the whole school approach to discipline, with information about school rules, consequences, processes for addressing bullying and the responsible use of technology and critical incident management.
It will include references to the following suite of DOE revised policies and procedures:Over the coming months, we have plans to consult and collaborate with you to develop this key document for our school.
We will invite you to participate in this process in the following ways:-
- Participation in P&C Consultations
- Feedback through our suggestion box – via the office window
- COVID Guidelines allowing in the future – stakeholder consultation groups.
We thank you in advance for your vital support, participation and feedback in this process.
If you have any queries or need clarification, please contact the office.
School Camp Funds
Earlier this year many of our Year 5 and 6 parents will have paid camp deposits. Some families have requested refunds. We ask families to discuss prior to requesting a refund whether they would like this refund to be retained by the school to go towards the cost of the alternative activities we are currently in the process of planning. There will still be a cost associated with these activities.
Wellbeing and Relationships
One of our main areas of work aside from Curriculum is supporting student wellbeing and their relationships with others. Not all childhood conflict is termed as “Bullying”. Childhood conflict is a normal and necessary part of childhood development, just as much as learning to crawl, walk and talk. It provides for children a learning opportunity for how to handle uncomfortable feelings in an appropriate way. It helps them learn relationship skills that will be vital as they progress through their lives and develop into adults. Just as they will learn and use their reading and writing skill throughout their lives, thy will use their conflict resolution, relationship and emotional regulation skills. Should you have any questions or concerns around your child’s development in this area, please discuss this with your child’s classroom teacher. We have many Student Welfare supports in our school.
Learning Walls
As part of our Reading Improvement Journey we are focussing on the use of “Learning Walls” in our classrooms. We would like to encourage you to talk with your child about their reading goals and what their strategies are to help them reach their goal. The Leadership Team look forward to visiting classrooms this term. Our visits focus around five key questions:
- What are you learning?
- How are you doing?
- How do you know?
- How can you improve?
- Where can you go for help?
Feedback
We are always open to feedback as this helps our school to continuously grow and improve. There are many appropriate ways to provide feedback to our school and we appreciate the time and effort people have taken to ensure they are using these avenues. At the moment we have modified some of our avenues for providing feedback. The most effective way in this present situation is to email our admin@calliopess.eq.edu.au email address or via a phone call.
Kindest Regards,

What a busy term it has been for 1C!
In English, we have been learning about Poems and we all performed a poem to our classmates using appropriate volume, gestures and expression. Next, we are going to be learning how to retell traditional stories.

In Maths, we are busy learning how to read o’clock and half-past on the analogue clock, and how to read and write on a digital clock. We have started to learn how to identify numbers on a number line and how to use a number line to do addition.
In Science, we are learning about natural, managed and constructed landscapes, as well as features of day and night skies and how they change.

Congratulations to 6B who had a great attendance rate for Week 4. Their attendance rate was 95% for the week! Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
The Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson this week is: Responsible – I use my words, not my body. With almost 700 students in the playground at break time it’s not uncommon for students to bump into each other. When this happens, we need to remember to use our words and not our body. Ways to help reduce potential clashes include:
- Remembering that by using our words and not our bodies we avoid getting into trouble;
- Walking on the concrete towards the oval. This will help ensure our bodies are calm and we stay safe;
- If we bump into someone, remembering that accidents happen and that the person most likely did not mean it;
- And if a situation develops, remember to say, “Stop. I don’t like it.” From here, walk away and tell a teacher.
Fantastic Fun Friday is on this Friday and the theme is Hollywood Red Carpet! Students can dress as their favourite celebrity, character from a TV show or book, or their favourite story. Alternatively, they can also just wear free dress and be Paparazzi. There will be a photo frame up in the Undercroft in the morning and lots of pictures will be taken so be sure to join in the fun.
Also, Calliope News on Facebook every Tuesday at 9.00am so please check it out.
Have a great week
Thanks.

Student Welfare Teacher
Here we are in Week 5 of Term 3 and we get a short school week. We hope that our families and staff spent the long weekend recharging, ready to tackle another week.
Pie Drive
Last week, Pie Drive letters and order forms were sent home via email. If you haven’t seen it yet, please have a read and make sure you check your junk folder. Notes are also being sent home with the eldest student, as we are aware there is a formatting issue with the emailed version. We are very excited to be able to hold a Pie Drive this term and we hope that families can support it.
Orders are due back by Monday 24th of August. NO LATE ORDERS CAN BE ACCEPTED, SORRY. Please return order forms and money to the P&C Box outside the office.
Delivery Days
Prep – Year 2: Wednesday 9th of September
Year 3 – Year 6: Wednesday 16th of September
For families with children in different year levels, your delivery date will be determined by your eldest child’s year level.
Fathers’ Day is on Sunday 6th of September this year. We are super thrilled to be able to hold our Fathers’ Day Stall in 2020, with everything else going on. It is great to be in Queensland, but we are certainly thinking of everyone in other states at this challenging time. Our P&C will be seeking parent volunteers to help at our stalls. Please email pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au if you can help out. We will be confirming dates ASAP, but they should be in Week 8 (Monday 31st August – Friday 4th August). Stay turned in next weeks’ newsletter.
Tuckshop & Uniform Shop
This term, Tuckshop will be open First and Second Breaks, Tuesday through to Friday. We are still cashless, due to COVID procedures, so make sure you place all Tuckshop and uniform orders on the Flexischools App. Contact us via Facebook or via pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au for any queries regarding uniforms or tuckshop. We are always happy to help.
Flexischools
We have found an alternative to Flexischools which is more user friendly for our families and our P&C. Throughout this term we will be transitioning to use QKR, but don’t worry, this will be a slow transition. For now, Flexischools is still in use and this is the best way to order your tuckshop and uniforms. We will keep you updated as the transition begins in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
