Welcome to Week Three of Term Two. In the next few weeks, I will go through the school’s Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). Below is a summary of our AIP. We are in a transition as we move to version 9 of the curriculum. In 2024 we commenced using Version 9 of English and this year we are using Version 9 of Maths. Each year we will transition to each of our eight Learning Areas. Our 2025 School Priority is, “Building an expert teaching team to lead systematic implementation of the Australian Curriculum in English with a focus on reading.”
This is unpacked through four priorities. They are –
- Data – Use school and student performance data to inform teaching and student learning.
- Curriculum – Build staff capability in V9 AC English to deliver high quality curriculum with a focus on reading
- Pedagogy – Build staff capability in using the agreed high-impact whole school pedagogies for
- Collaborative Capability Development – Development and implementation of agreed collaborative capability development processes
I will unpack each of these in the upcoming newsletters this term.
Bikes and Scooters
A reminder to our whole school community that bikes and scooters are to be walked out of the school grounds and on the foot paths in front of the school. We have over 500 students in our school and it is busy at arrival and departure times. This is for the safety of everyone. Each week students and adults are getting hurt where these rules are not being followed. Please consider others by observing this rule for safety of our whole school community.
RotaKids Update
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month
Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that such violence will not be tolerated. Calliope staff and students are able to wear purple on Monday 12 May for this cause. Students are asked to bring a gold coin donation on this day when wearing purple. This is a RotaKids initiative this year and appreciate your support.
Date Claimer - Walk Safely to School Day
Friday, 16 May, is Walk Safely to School Day. We will be walking to school with families again this year. Students and families are asked to meet staff at the top of the hill near the Bowls Club – opposite Drakes at 8.30am to walk to school together.

Road Safety Reminder: Walk, Don’t Ride Near School Grounds
For the safety of everyone in our school community, we remind all students and families of the importance of walking bikes and scooters when on or near school grounds. The pathways around the school are narrow and often highly congested during drop-off and pick-up times. Riding in these areas poses a serious risk—several students have already been injured by bikes and scooters passing through. Please help us keep our school safe by walking your wheels in these zones. A few extra moments of care can prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.
A Nude Food lunchbox is one that eliminates disposable wrappers and single-use packaging, such as plastic, foil, or zip-lock bags. Instead, it focuses on packaging-free foods, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional packed lunches.
Why is it important?
The idea behind Nude Food has two primary goals:
- Encourage children to consume more whole, real foods while reducing reliance on processed snacks and packaged items.
- Reduce single-use packaging and minimize litter around schools.
Studies reveal that, on average, a single packed lunch generates three pieces of litter, contributing to a total of 30kg of waste per child every year. At Calliope State School, this translates to a staggering 16.8 metric tons of avoidable waste annually!
Introducing “Nude Food Mondays”
Calliope State School is proud to launch "Nude Food Mondays," an initiative to inspire students to bring rubbish-free lunches, free from plastic bags, paper bags, wrappings, or cling wrap. Not only does this promote sustainability, but it also encourages students to pack meals that nourish their bodies and support healthy brain function.
To motivate participation, every Monday we’ll hold a raffle! Teachers will give out raffle tickets to students who bring a "Nude Lunch," and these students will be entered to win a Nude Food Lunchbox Pack.
Top Tips for Packing Nude Food Lunchboxes:
- Find a Nude Food approach that suits your family’s routine.
- Keep things fresh and exciting with a variety of colourful foods.
- Start small! Replace one single-use item in your child’s lunchbox with a Nude Food alternative. Include foods you know they love, while gradually introducing new ones to try.
- Shop for foods with minimal packaging—fruit and vegetables are an excellent place to start. Seasonal produce often tastes better and is more affordable.
- Nude Food doesn’t require expensive lunchboxes or perfectly curated meals—simple and sustainable is the key.
See below a "Nude Food" example from Alyrah in 3B.
The month of May is Scholastic’s National Family Reading Month and at Calliope State School we will be celebrating reading with several events this month.
Book Fair will be held in Week 5 of this term. We will be open for students and parents to purchase books before school and during the first lunch break.
National Simultaneous Storytime will be held on Wednesday 21 May. Students at Calliope State School will join students from around Australia and New Zealand in reading The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel at 12pm.
The Premier’s Reading Challenge also begins this month. This state-wide initiative aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read widely for pleasure and leaning. Students will be given a recording form to log the books that they read throughout the reading period.
Keep an eye out in the newsletter for more details in the coming weeks. Happy Reading!!
