Swooping Birds
Spring is breeding season for birds, and some species are quite protective parents!
We currently have some resident magpies outside of the school grounds and some plovers in the out-of-bounds area on the back oval. Students are reminded that they are to stay away from these areas and not to do anything that would provoke a response from these birds.
PBL Lesson this week
PBL focus this week is resilience during assessment. Classes will discuss ways that we can be resilient when working through assessment.

Georgie Gardner: Parenting and Living in the Spotlight
For almost 10 years, Australians spent every morning with the witty, elegant, and down-to-earth Georgie Gardner — first as the newsreader for Channel Nine’s Today show and later as co-host with Karl Stefanovic.
While the former role cemented her as one of the country’s most beloved TV personalities, the latter propelled her into a level of fame Georgie never expected — nor sought out.
“The scrutiny is pretty intense and it’s certainly the aspect of the job I loathe the most, apart from the alarm clock,” she laughs.
Read the full story about Georgie Gardner and her resilience advice.

Procedure Writing in Action in 3B
This Term: Crafting and Learning in the Classroom
So far this term, our students dove into the exciting world of procedure writing! As part of their learning journey, they explored the essential elements of crafting clear and concise instructions. To bring their learning to life, students have been making and building items in the classroom.
Students have been brainstorming ideas and breaking down the steps needed to complete their projects. Whether it was designing a simple recipe, making a chatterbox, or creating a piece of art, they focused on clarity and detail to ensure anyone could follow their instructions.
The highlight of this unit was the hands-on experience! Once their procedure drafts were finalised throughout lessons so far, students eagerly gathered materials and put their plans into action. Watching their written procedures transform into tangible creations has been a rewarding experience, fostering teamwork, creativity, and critical thinking.
In the end, students have showcased their projects, demonstrating not only their newly acquired writing skills but also their ability to collaborate and innovate. It was a fantastic way to combine learning with creativity, and our students now have a deeper appreciation for the art of procedure writing!
Please note for swimming lessons at Calliope SS ensure your child has
- Togs and a swim shirt
- Swimming Cap (These can be purchased at Kmart, Big W, Sports Power, or our local pool )
- Towel
- Swimming bag
A couple of things to consider for swimming-
- Ensure all items of clothing (including underwear and socks) are clearly labelled with their name and class.
- If your child’s lesson is early in the day, I would recommend that students are dressed, ready for swimming PRIOR to arriving at school with their uniform worn over the top.
- Goggles are permitted but please ensure they fit correctly and are adjusted accordingly, and practice with your child putting them on.
- Practice independence with your child with dressing, undressing, and talk to them about the importance of neatly placing all their clothing items back in their bag to assist them in organising themselves and to limit lost belongings.
- If your child is anxious or not very confident in the water, talk to them about what will happen and their feelings and please let their teacher know if you think there is something we need to be aware of.
PBL Lesson this week

This week we are focusing on what helps us to be mindful?
How to be a good listener
When we’re having conversations with friends, or someone is sharing a challenge with us, most of the time we listen to respond, when in reality, it’s more important we listen to understand.
When we’re being an empathetic listener, we’re prioritising listening to the other person rather than talking ourselves – and this can be easier said than done! While we might not be saying as much, in reality, we are often helping that person more than we know by simply showing we care and that we’re paying attention.
The next time someone comes to you with a problem, try to remember these three key rules;
- Don’t judge.
- Don’t fix.
- Don’t get into the drama.
Other tips we like for listening well include…
- Pay attention. Put the phone down, turn to face the person.
- Be present. Try to not think about what you are going to say next or to jump in when they are still speaking.
- Show interest. Ask questions, nod.
- Practise empathy. Try to put yourself in the speaker’s shoes.
- Repeat what you heard, to clarify that you are understanding.
It can be harder than it sounds to follow these rules, especially when it comes to not offering solutions. It is natural that we want to help the person who is having a difficult time. Keep in mind, feeling heard is often the biggest help, so you are already doing plenty just by being there.
Of course, you don’t want to be lost for words either. Here are some things you can practise saying that will help you avoid falling into old habits;
Remember being an empathetic listener is all about showing that you care and listening actively to what the person is saying. These phrases are starting points to show empathy but the most important thing is to respond genuinely and authentically.

Did you know that you can apply for an exemption for your student if they are needing to take leave from school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days for an exceptional circumstance?
Please read the attached information sheet below for more information relating to this. The exemption form is also attached. These forms are also printed and available from the office.
If you are wanting to apply for an exemption, you will need to complete the form and have a discussion with your classroom teacher or organise a meeting with the Deputy Principal of the year level your student is in. You can do this by phoning the school office. They will then discuss the exemption with you and make the decision as to whether the exemption will be approved or not.
