Welcome to Week 2 of Term 2. This morning we held our ANZAC Day School Commemorative Service.
Tomorrow is ANZAC Day and we are looking forward to seeing students join us at both the Dawn Service in Gladstone and the day service in Calliope. There will be no assembly on Friday.

Equity and Excellence
Across the system three priorities have been identified for Digital innovation in teaching and learning:
- Digitally connected: Setting critical foundations through digital connectivity and access to devices for students.
- Digitally learning: Preparing every student for success in a digital world by creating engaging digital learning opportunities.
- Digitally capable: Empowering a digitally capable and confident teaching workforce.
Some examples of system support for school leaders and teaching teams that can impact on student learning are:
- Digitally connected:
- Improving connectivity through bandwidth upgrade.
- Connecting students to digital learning opportunities.
- Digitally learning:
- Provide students with the opportunity to develop their digital competency.
- Support parents to become digital learning partners.
- Digitally capable:
- Enhancing the capability and confidence of teachers
- Implementing strategies to respond to advances in technology and contribute to the development of guidelines such as the Australian Framework for Generative Artificial Intelligence in Schools.
Student Work – Fantastic Mr Fox
The leadership team love it when students share their amazing work with us. Below are drawings that students in 2C have done to create a map from the story, Fantastic Mr Fox. You can see the amazing detail these students have in their drawings.

ANZAC Day Dawn Service
Students wishing to represent Calliope State School at the Dawn Service can meet Ms Norris at Brumby’s (Valley Shopping Centre in Gladstone) at 5.15am.
Students will be part of the march to the cenotaph for the service.
Join us on the 10th May 2024 to remember Dolly, to help raise funds to END BULLYING, and share the Dolly’s Dream message to be kind and speak, even if your voice shakes.
Gold Coin Donation would be appreciated and students can wear blue.
We have had a very busy start to the term. We have been continuing to learn our letters and sounds and have been doing some fun letter craft. We have also been learning about ANZAC Day in preparation for our school service. In English we have started our unit on Fairytales, beginning with Little Red Riding Hood last week. In our classroom there are story tables for our Fairytales and ANZAC stories and we love engaging with them in our VIP (Very Important Play) sessions.
In Science we started learning about objects, the materials that they are made of, and their properties. This week, we went and observed the objects and materials in our playground. We can’t wait to get started on some Fairytale STEM activities throughout the term.

Hi Families
Term 2 is off to a cracker start, with the arrival of the new marquees in our sports house colours and a new microwave for the preppies so they can have hours of playdoh (sensory learning) fun.
Also, a BIG thank you to Catherine Whipps (Regional Operations Manager) and her amazing team at Aurizon Callemondah for donating water bottles to the P&C.
These water bottles will be for the sick bay and will definitely brighten up this area with the splash of orange. There will be many more exciting announcements to come, so keep your eyes peeled.
The committee have been working hard to finalise the strategic plan which will provide guidance and structure on how our schools P&C operates as well as making the needs of our children the number one priority.
Over the coming weeks you will see “question time” posts on our Facebook site. This will give our parents and guardians the opportunity to have your say and provide feedback via polls or direct messages. All feedback, good or bad is welcomed.
What are you going to do with the feedback you ask? With the information provided by the school community, the P&C will know what the families of our school are wanting, and we will do our best to see if we have the capacity to fulfil your requests.
Without volunteers our vision for the school cannot be created, so we are asking if you have a spare hour or two, please lend a hand because like they say, “many hands make light work”. You don’t have to be a member of the P&C to volunteer.
Upcoming events for May/ June volunteers are needed.
- Mother’s Day Stall – Wednesday 8th May 2024
- Sports Day – June
- Under 8’s Day – June
- Sausage Sizzle – June
- Pie and Lamington Drive - June

Volunteers and Classroom Support
At Calliope State School, we encourage active participation between the school, parents and local community. This partnership enables our school community to work together towards providing the best possible supportive environment for your child and their learning. Parents are encouraged to participate in the operation of the school through several channels.
- Attending P&C meetings
- Assisting in the Tuckshop or Uniform Shop
- Providing classroom assistance ie reading groups,
- Involvement in school activities and functions ie sports events, camps
All volunteers are required to attend a Mandatory All Staff Training program (MAST) – Parent Volunteer workshop before they are able to assist.
Completing your Volunteer mandatory training has got a lot easier. We are aware we all live busy lives and unable to commit to a particular day and time to complete the training onsite. You are now able to complete the training in the comfort of your own home and in your own time.
All you need to do is click on the link, read the key messages guide, complete the declaration and submit in person to the school office. When you sign in as a volunteer via the Ipad, you are declaring you are aware of your obligations as per the key messages guide. This is valid for 12 months.
For further information or a copy of the key messages guide please email communication.calliopess@gmail.com or contact the school directly.
NOTE: All volunteers must be 18 yrs+ (other than parents of children attending the school), must have a blue card BEFORE they can commence working with children. Please click here to apply for a blue card.
If you would like more information on anything we have mentioned or anything that we haven’t, we would love to hear from you at; pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au
Warm Regards

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
The QEW Survey is run in Weeks 1 to 4 of Term 2 each year. Students in Years 4 - 6 will be asked to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter has been sent out to parents and carers this week. If you have any questions, please contact the school.
