Welcome to Week Seven of Term One. Prep A is being showcased on our foyer TV. If you are at our school make sure you take the time to see the amazing work going on in this room. This week we have had our school photos taken. It is great to see our students looking their best. On Thursday we have our students from Years 4 – 6 participating in the Combined Schools Musical Excursion. Congratulations to Mackenna, Priyah and April on representing Calliope State School in the Combined Schools Musical, The Little Mermaid. The girls are sea creatures in the performance. Shows begin this week and we wish them well.
The Student Resilience Survey
Resilience and wellbeing are key factors to ensure a happy and fulfilling future for our young people.
We are proud to partner with The Resilience Project to assist our students in their wellbeing journey. In order to gain an accurate understanding of our students’ strengths and challenges, we will be conducting a resilience survey developed by Resilient Youth Australia and the University of South Australia. In recent years, they have surveyed more than 500,000 Australian school students.
We will administer the Resilience Survey this year online in class time. Students typically take 30-50 minutes to complete the survey.
The data from the survey will be reported in aggregate descriptive form only, by year level and gender, and no individual student responses can be identified.
The Resilience Survey is completely voluntary and anonymous. The survey will provide valuable information to assist us to create and maintain the best culture of wellbeing and resilience that we can. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s participation in this survey project, please contact Christine Johnston on 4975 8333.
We thank you for your support.
Equity and Excellence
Students across all Queensland schools are required to put their phones away for the day from the start of 2024. As explained in my previous newsletter, this process has been in place at Calliope State School. The following slide explains why this has been put in place across Queensland school. I have also added some common question and answers, how you can help and a QR code with further information.
Last Friday, classes participated in the annual Clean Up School Day. Classes cleaned up their designated areas across the school. Well done everyone for looking after our school environment.

Congratulations to Prep A who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 6. Their attendance rate was 97.27% for the week!
Also, congratulations to the 6 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 6.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Wide World of Sports with Mrs Betts
Some of our Calliope State School girls have participated in the Chelsea Baker Cup Rugby League skill sessions. They have had a lot of fun learning new skills and practising safe tackling. Last Wednesday, they competed for the Chelsea Baker Cup. They played three games of Rugby League. The girls played well and beat both Kin Kora and St John teams.

Year 6 Calliope State School students were very lucky to get a visit from the Capras during their visit to Gladstone to play at Marley Brown. The students had a lot of fun participating in a Rugby League skill session with the two Capra players.

Calliope State School had 14 boys attend Port Curtis Rugby League trials on Friday. Congratulations to Archie, Brax and Kyson who were selected in PC teams. Archie made the PC U12s team, and Brax and Kyson made the PC U11s team. Great effort boys!

Congratulations to all our talented sporting stars who have recently made Port Curtis teams. Summer, Ruby, Bella, Lillee and Kai for making it into the Port Curtis Touch Football team. Summer again, Brax and Will for making the PC netball team, and Adele for making the PC basketball team.
Swimming Star
Year 3 student Isabella competed in the Central Queensland Regional Swimming Championships over the weekend and won a bronze in 50m freestyle. Congratulations Isabella!
Mrs Betts will be down on the back oval at 8:35am on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to encourage students in Year 3-6 to run laps of the oval. Each lap is recorded and there will be a competition amongst the year levels who gets the most laps. The top two-year levels will win the opportunity to play a game of dodgeball with Mrs Betts on the last day of term.
Please encourage your child to come and join us on the back oval, especially if they’ve got that little bit of extra energy that would be helpful to burn off before going into the classroom for the day.
Once again this year, some of our year levels are learning skipping in their PE lessons. To encourage students to practise their skipping skills Mrs Betts has a One Minute and Two Minute wall of fame in the hall. Students who can skip non-stop for this time can add their name to the wall of fame. At the end of term there is a fun competition (The Great Calliope Skip Off) where students on the two-minute wall of fame get the opportunity to compete in a skip off against other students and teachers. Last man/child skipping gets a prize.
This year Mrs Betts is extending the competition to parents who might what to set themselves a challenge. If you are able to make two minutes non-stop skipping you are very welcome to come join us in the skip off.
Whilst in class, teachers are not available to come to the phone. If you need to make contact with your children throughout the day, please do this via the office. These should be in an emergency situation only. Messages received after 1.45pm may not get acknowledged by the class in time, so please ensure your children know their pick up arrangements.
Hi everyone! With our AGM less than two weeks away, now is a great time to start thinking about how you wish to be involved in your child/ren’s school. Being a P&C member is a great way to keep informed with what is happening around our school and decisions being made for our school and students. Becoming a member doesn’t require you to make a commitment but means you’ll receive the minutes from our meetings in your inbox and you’re in control how involved you want to be. Membership forms for 2024 are available at the office and we strongly encourage you to consider joining us this year.
If you have a stronger desire to make a difference around our school, you might want to consider taking on an official role within the team. At the AGM all positions are declared vacant, are open for nominations and an executive committee must be elected. Roles available for your consideration include; President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Grants Officer, Fundraising Officer and Communications Officer. For any information regarding these roles please feel free to reach out on our contact information below.
If your commitment comfort level lies somewhere between general member and executive role, we’re always looking for members to be involved in our working groups. These small but mighty teams are committed to continuing the improvement or our wonderful school and include:
- Fundraising team
- Year 5/6 working group
- Tuckshop and Uniform shop
- SafeST working group
You don’t need to be present at the AGM to have your membership and/or nomination forms accepted. So, to get involved, please collect a form from the office and pop it into the P&C lock box located in the office also.
We hope all our students attending the Combined Schools Musical; The Little Mermaid, enjoy their excursion on Thursday. We are proud to have funded the transportation costs to and from the GECC for this amazing opportunity to support our own amazing students performing and also all the students in the greater Gladstone region. Chookas to all!!
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to the team on communication.calliopess@gmail.com for our Communication Officer or pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au for our Executive team.
Warm regards,
Heidi, Geoff, Angela and Lisa.

- Secure 24/7 online access.
- Available anytime, anywhere — access QParents on your smart phone, tablet or computer on a web browser or using the app (iPhone or Android).
Greater transparency of information
- Improves accountability between parents and schools by providing parents with timely access to their child's information online.
- Allows parents to engage more deeply in their child's schooling.
Improved administration efficiencies for schools
- Allows schools to streamline their administrative processes and cut down on printing.
What do you need to do to get started?
The office will be send out emails inviting parents or guardians to become a QParents Account Owner (QPAO) for their student at the beginning of their enrolment at the school. QPAOs will be able to register for QParents to access and manage the student's information online, view the student's information and submit requests to update some of the student's details.
QPAOs will also be able to invite other people (such as another family member), to view the student's information. Once invited, these people can register for QParents as “delegated viewers". A delegated viewer can see the student's details, but cannot make updates.
When you receive your invitation email, simply follow the instructions to register your QParents account. The process should take less than 10 minutes to complete. Initial registration and addition of students to your account must be done on a desktop or laptop computer. Once registered, you will then be able to access QParents using your mobile device (via web browser or by downloading the iPhone or Android App).
Invitations sent by email will only ever come from no.reply@qparents.qld.edu.au. You will not be invited to register from any other email address or organisation.
If you do no not want to register you can just ignore the invitation and your child's student information will not be available to anyone through QParents.
Identity Verification
To obtain full access to student information, as part of their QParents registration users must complete an identity verification process. QParents offers two options for identity verification – online and offline.
For fully online verification (the fastest option), you will need to verify 100 points of the following identity documents online:
Australian Passport | 50 pts | Australian Marriage Certificate | 40 pts |
Australian Driver Licence | 50 pts | Australian Citizenship Certificate | 40 pts |
Australian Birth Certificate | 50 pts | Change of Name Certificate | 40 pts |
Medicare Card | 20 pts | Australian Visa (foreign passports) | 20 pts |
If you cannot verify 100 points of the above ID documents online, you may still register for QParents, but you will need to attend the school to verify documentation in person after you have registered online.
Full instructions on how to verify your documents and what you may need to bring to the school will be provided as part of the invitation and registration process.
If you don't have sufficient documents, or are unsure, you may still be able to register. For more information on the online identity verification process, see https://qparents.qld.edu.au/#/identityInformation .
Please note that QParents does not maintain copies or records of any identity documents used for account verification, either online or offline.
EQ ID
You will also need to have your child's EQ ID (their Education Queensland identification number) in order to complete your QParents registration. You can access this via the school office.
Safe and secure
QParents is a secure portal that meets strict industry standards. The Department of Education and Training considers student information to be confidential (it is classified as PROTECTED by the Department). Only people with the right to access information about their child will be given an account. Additionally, as part of the registration process, 100 points of identity or equivalent will need to be presented to prove that the person who is registering is the person the school invited.
