Welcome to Week 10 – This week the school had its annual Under 8’s Day. I had the pleasure of being able to see the amazing day come together for our Calliope students. Not only were there great engaging activities for our Under 8’s, this morning also provided a great leadership opportunity for our Year Six students to prepare and host an activity for Calliope students. This would be one of the best Under 8’s days I have ever attended. A huge thank you to Raelene, our team of teachers, our P&C, Helping Hands, Strong Communities, Calliope Police and Fire Services and everyone else involved. This will be a memorable learning experience for all those involved.
Mystery Person @ Assembly
Did you know that our Mystery Person at assembly has become a very exciting event for our students? Last week our Mystery Person was Indianna Jones. He came all the way to Calliope State School to watch our assembly and discover the class that walks in beautifully, that sits and listens throughout the assembly and stands proudly to sing the National Anthem. The class that is chosen by the Mystery Person gets to sit in the VIP seats the following week. I wonder who our Mystery Person will be this week. Please consider coming to our assembly this week for our Principals Parade. Students who are demonstrating high qualities of being safe, respectful and responsible in each class will receive an ACE Award which is given out each term. You will also get to see our Mystery Person and be able to visit our classrooms after to celebrate NAIDOC week. We are looking forward to seeing parents this Friday.
Student Code of Conduct
Each week I will focus on an aspect of Calliope’s Student Code of Conduct. This week the focus is Differentiated Responses
Class teacher provides in-class or in-school disciplinary responses to low-level or minor problem behaviour. This may include:
- Pre-correction (e.g. “Remember, walk quietly to your seat”)
- Non-verbal and visual cues (e.g. posters, hand gestures)
- Whole class practising of routines
- Ratio of 4 positive to 1 negative commentary or feedback to class
- Corrective feedback (e.g. “Hand up when you want to ask a question”)
- Rule reminders (e.g. “When the bell goes, stay seated until I dismiss you”)
- Explicit behavioural instructions (e.g. “Pick up your pencil”)
- Proximity control
- Tactical ignoring of inappropriate behaviour (not of the student)
- Revised seating plan and relocation of student/s
- Individual positive reinforcement for appropriate behaviour
- Classwide incentives
- Reminders of incentives or class goals
- Redirection
- Low voice and tone for individual instructions
- Give 30 second ‘take-up’ time for student/s to process instruction/s
- Reduce verbal language
- Break down tasks into smaller chunks
- Provide positive choice of task order (e.g. “Which one do you want to start with?”)
- Prompt student to take a break or time away in class
- Model appropriate language, problem solving and verbalise thinking process (e.g. “I’m not sure what is the next step, who can help me?”)
- Provide demonstration of expected behaviour
- Peer consequence (e.g. corrective feedback to influential peer demonstrating same problem behaviour)
- Private discussion with student about expected behaviour
- Restorative Conversation
- Problem Solving Conversation
- Redirection for inappropriate behaviour
- Warning of more serious consequences (e.g. removal from classroom – Buddy Class or Alternative space)
Parent Survey
Our school is always looking at ways to improve. Our last parent survey from last term heard parent voice to increase our swimming program with a strong preference for the School’s PE teacher to facilitate the swimming program. This year all grade levels will participate in the swimming program in Term 4, facilitated by Cathy Betts and her team of swimming coaches. Parent Voice from the survey also requested better communication of upcoming events. We have introduced a calendar into our newsletter that can be printed out and put on your fridge. We are also looking at other ways of communication with our community.
On Wednesday next term, a survey that reflects your opinions on Term 2 will be emailed to all parents. This survey will dig deeper into how we can best meet the needs of our community. There will also be consultation with our community to see if there is support for a chaplain and/or student wellbeing officer in our school.
Please know that the platform used for these surveys, “Survey Monkey” keeps your identity private. The school does not know your replies. I have been open in sharing our last survey whit our P&C executive. The survey in anonymous.
Enjoy your Holidays
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday. Take the time to enjoy this special time with your children. A great question to ask your children each day is “What are three things that have gone well today?” This teaches our children to reflect positively on their day. It is also a great question for ourselves.
Parent and Community Code of Conduct
Parents and other visitors to schools support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful.
Approaching other students in the school grounds to discuss concerns with them is not appropriate in any school. Please refer to the Parent and Community Code of Conduct and request a meeting to discuss any concerns about your child’s education – allowing staff time to prepare and appreciating our time may be limited.
Upcoming Events Calendar
Some reminders of upcoming events from the calendar include –

Newsletter – Week 9 Attendance Data
Congratulations to 1A who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 9. Their attendance rate was 98.33% for the week! Also, congratulations to 1 class which was at or above our school attendance target of 94% for week.
Find out our winning class for the overall attendance for Term 2 at Principal's Parade.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Parents and caregivers must send children to school every school day under Queensland law unless there is an acceptable reason such as:
- Illness
- Competing in school events.
If your child is going to be absent from school, you must let the school know why the absence has occurred within two school days of their return. If possible, it is best to advise the school beforehand.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for reasons such as:
- Birthdays
- Shopping
- Visiting family and friends
- If they sleep in
- Looking after other children
- Minor check ups or care, such as hair cuts.
Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.
Establishing good routines around school can assist with regular school attendance. These include:
- Have a set time to go to bed
- Have a set time to get out of bed
- Have uniform and school bag ready the night before
- Have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- Set a time for daily homework activities
- Speak about school positively
- Send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term.
If you are experiencing difficulty in sending your child to school, contact the school for advice and support.
Happy Week 10 everyone!! As semester one draws to an end we would like to send out a HUGE thank you to EVERYONE who has volunteered even just a little of their time so far this school year! Every half hour here and an hour there help the team massively, which then enables us to provide more financial support to our students!

We had so much fun interacting with heaps of lovely school families and soon-to-be school families; with many Kindy friends enjoying the wonderful activities too! I hope all the littlies loved meeting our mascot ‘Nugget’. We know he enjoyed meeting you all and posing for lots of photos! The school did an amazing job organising, as usual, such an enjoyable morning for the students! Thanks to all involved!

Uniform Shop located at the entrance to the Multipurpose Hall (closes to the oval). Uniform can also be purchased through the QKR app.
The PBL lesson focus this week is ‘Tuckshop Expectations’. Last week, students were engaged in Calliope News where the routine of collecting the tuckshop was delivered. Across the school, students were explicitly instructed about the process and responsibility of the tuckshop monitors. All classes now have the same badges to be worn by the tuckshop monitors. They also have been given a new badge for lunch tub monitors as well. This is to ensure consistency for these responsiiblities for every class. The tuckshop staff also are finding it a lot easier to spot the tuckshop monitors on their arrival. If you would like a copy of the lesson that we do at school to reinforce at home, please email jxran4@eq.edu.au.

Congratulations Calliope State School! We did it again! Last Wednesday, Calliope State School participated in Sensory Play as part of the end of term celebration if they got 20 whole class stamp charts completed. We reached our goal on the Monday prior at 12:30pm. Cutting it close Calliope…

Calliope State School will be celebrating NAIDCO Week on 23rd of June (Friday of Week 10) due to the dates of the week being during our school holidays. Our classrooms will be participating in activities to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
On Friday June 23, we will be having our Whole School Parade from 9.15 – 10am. From 11am to 11.45am will be holding a picnic and all parents and caregivers are invited to bring a picnic blanket and lunch to share with their children from 11 – 11.45am.

2024 Prep Information Sessions
2024 Prep Enrolments
We are currently taking enrolments for our 2024 Prep intake. Children born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019 are eligible to enrol. Enrolment packs will be available from the start of Term 3 and our Parent Information sessions will be on Thursday July 20 at 9.15am and repeated at 5.00pm. A school tour will be available at 4.30pm on that day. For further information please contact the school.
We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out by going to the Administration building and signing out on the iPad, collecting a slip and presenting it to the classroom teacher.
These processes are in place so that the teachers and school staff are aware of the movement of students at school. This is for the protection and welfare of all staff and students. It is important to look at the impact that late arrival and early departure have on a student/s education and those around them. It is not only disruptive to learning that is occurring in the classrooms at the time of arrival and departure, it is all time that accumulates to missed opportunities for learning. A student who is arriving late or leaving early by 15 minutes twice a week will miss, in total, the equivalent of 4 days of school across the year.
We ask parents to assist us by checking their message bank before returning calls to the school, to establish which staff member has phoned. Due to the high volume of staff within our school it is not possible for us to identify who may have called you. Please call the member on their direct number if they have provided this as this will free up the office phone lines.
Administration of Medication at School
If your child requires staff to administer medication at school, we would just like to remind you of the requirements
associated with the administration of medications at school.
Please note, school staff will only administer medication that:
• has been prescribed by a qualified health practitioner (e.g. doctor, dentist)
• is in its original (most recent) container
• has an attached pharmacy label
• the pharmacy label instructions match the Medical form.
• the parent/carer has completed Section 1 of the Administration of Medication at School Record Sheet
(routine/short-term medication) – copies of these forms are in our office. Please see our friendly office staff.
• the student has received a dose at home without ill effect prior to the school administering the medication.
N.B. If your child requires more than one medication, you will need to complete a form for each medication.
Please contact the school office if you wish to discuss your child’s requirements further.
As you know, schools and classrooms are very busy places!
To ensure our students are fully engaged in their learning, and our office staff are able to complete their multitude of daily required tasks, we ask that parents communicate clearly with their child at the beginning of each day where you will be picking them up from in the afternoon.
As you can imagine it is extremely difficult for our office staff to field scores of phone calls asking for messages to be passed on to children regarding pick-up information.
Should you need to contact your children throughout the day, please do this via the office. These should be emergency situations only. Messages received after 1.45pm may not be acknowledged by the class in time, so please ensure children know their pick-up arrangements.
Last term your child brought home a letter regarding ICAS. ICAS is designed to target the higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies of students in Year 2 to Year 6. Participation in any of the tests is completely optional.
These tests take place throughout Term 3 on the dates listed below. The cost of each test is also listed. We cannot offer catch up sessions for absent students on the scheduled sitting day. Please indicate which test/s you would like your child to take part in and pay for each test on the QKR APP or via EFTPOS at the Office. Please return this form and have made payment by Friday, 28 July 2023 Late payments and forms cannot be accepted.
The Port to Park is on again in 2023. It is a fun run that will be held on Sunday 20 August. Entries are open now! Participants can nominate their school to receive funds as part of the event.
Take in the magnificent views along the 10km Koongo Dash starting at East Shores and winding along Marina Parklands and Spinnaker Park or the 3km Yallarm Family Run, crossing the Marina Bridge and back to East Shores. For those with a competitive spirit or plenty of stamina, why not try both!
Keep updated at Gladstone Ports Corporation Facebook or visit Port to Park for more information.
Last Friday Calliope State School students competed at the Country Coast Athletic trials in Miriam Vale. It was an action-packed day of athletics with our students bringing home ribbons galore! There were some fantastic results with many of our students advancing to the next stage, the Port Curtis Athletic trials. Well done to Sienna and Jacinta for winning the overall age champions for their age group! Congratulations to all our amazing athletes! We look forward to seeing you compete again next term. Mrs Betts was lucky enough to grab a couple of photos from the day.
Tony Martin Cup Rugby League
Last week our Calliope Rugby League team played their last game in the Tony Martin Cup competition. We came out fourth overall in the competition, only losing two games out of the five. The boys and girl had a lot of fun and played well as a team. Mrs Donald and Mrs Betts was proud of your efforts and sportsmanship throughout the competition.
A big shout out to Brian who supported Mrs Donald and Mrs Betts to coach the team!
SCHOOL HATS
Parents, can you please check your child's hat has their name on it and not someone elses. We have had many hats go missing and are trying to help families out by finding out their where abouts and returning them back to their rightful owner.
Thank you for your help in this matter.
- My 4 simple points to the sidestep technique that the professionals use to leave the opposition grabbing for air, and enabling your child to score more tries.
- How to accelerate once they've sidestepped to leave their opposition for dead.
- Fast footwork that is a must to confuse and trick their opposition, improving your child's game dramatically
- How to develop single-leg power which will add explosiveness to your child's sidestep and their speed
- How to perform a proper warm-up to increase their performance on the field

The play was adapted for the stage in 2009 by the National Theatre of Britain. The Cat in The Hat interrupts this rainy afternoon with his unexpected visit to Sally and her brother's cosy home. Their outspoken and outraged pet Fish is astounded and concerned, but this cat will not be deterred. He will teach us all to make our own fun with nothing but a little imagination. "It's fun to have fun, but you have to know how." Along with Thing One and Thing Two, the cat will fill the theatre with mischievous humour and madcap style.
Young and old alike will delight in this faithful adaptation of a classic book come to life before our very eyes.
Spoiler alert: Things run amuck, and quickly!
