QLD OLYMPICS UNLEASHED – JUNE 16 – YEARS 4 TO 6
On June 16 we will be hosting Australian representative Sprint Kayak athlete Mackenzie Duffy as a part of the QLD Olympics Unleashed program.
Olympics Unleashed is free and available to all primary schools across Queensland and is aimed at Years 4-6. Olympians and athletes aspiring for the Tokyo Olympics and beyond will share lessons from their Olympic journey that every student can learn from.
Presented in an interactive and engaging way, athletes will share how they set goals, overcome challenges and demonstrate resilience throughout their athletic journey.
CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS
Due to the number of students presenting with allergies and food intolerances in schools these days and the risk management that occurs around these matters, we do not allow birthday cakes or foods of any nature to be brought into school for celebrations. I thank you for your understanding around this.
150TH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT CONSENT FORMS
There will be Project Consent Forms sent home in the coming days in regards to the 150th Anniversary celebrations happening here at our school this year. The Project Consent Form provides consent for personal information and a licence for materials to be published online or in other public forums. We need to receive consent in writing before it uses or discloses an individual’s personal information or materials in a public forum. It is purely voluntary as to whether you give consent.
NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH A DISABILITY (NCCD)
Every year in August, all schools in Australia must collect information about students with disability who receive adjustments to access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. This process is called NCCD – Nationally Consistent Collection of Data. The NCCD is based on the judgement of teachers and other professionals working in the schools who provide adjustments to support students with disability in consultation with students and/or their parents/guardians or carers.
Further information regarding NCCD can be accessed from the link below:
POSITIVE ASKING CHILDREN ABOUT THEIR DAY
Every now and then I have parents explain to me their child won’t tell them how there day has been or what they have been doing. Also, they usually get the same response the shrug of the shoulders or nothing.
Here are some questions that you might find useful in generating positive conversations about their day at school:
- What made you smile today?
- Did anything funny happen?
- What made your teacher smile today?
- What made your teacher frown today?
- Did you like your lunch?
- Who did you sit with at lunch?
- If you could change one thing about your day, What would it be?
COUNTRY COAST ATHLETICS
A huge thank you needs to go to Cathy Betts and Casey Black for supporting our students who attended Country Coast Athletics on Friday and for their work supporting the smooth running of the event on the day.
Congratulations to Gian Pizzy and Cater Hough for taking out Age Champions on the day. Calliope State School also took out the Aggregate Trophy scoring a total of 230 points on the day.

STAFF OF THE WEEK LEADERSHIP AWARD – Angelina Davis
Angelina Davis for being willing to help out when needed, such as covering bus duty or an extra playground duty. Angelina supports her colleagues through sharing her ideas and resources and is the Year 2 Code Queen. She supports her students to succeed through her routines and curriculum planning. She enhances their learning by planning an excursion for the cohort.
STAFF MEMBER OF THE WEEK PEER AWARD – Sarah King
I would like to nominate Sarah King. Sarah has been a very supportive, collaborative and charismatic teacher aide in the Year 1 classrooms. The students look forward to her coming in everyday because of the way she interacts, facilitates and connects with the children. Sarah includes all students by using funny, engaging and creative strategies and approaches which everyone loves! I appreciate Sarah's help and hard work - thank you!
FINAL THOUGHT
The Arts at Calliope SS
This semester in The Arts has been full of imagination, creation and fun!
Prep and Year 4 have been practising their visual arts skills as they use the design elements of texture, space, colour and shape to create meaning in their artworks. I have been blown away by their use of imagination in their creations.
Years 1 and 5 have been exploring the world of media arts where they have used technology to create illusions in their artwork. Year 1 students have learned how to remove a background on a self portrait to make it look like they are somewhere else entirely, and Year 5 students have created a stop motion film where they brought inanimate objects to life.
Years 3 and 3/4E have been dancing the semester away and have learned how to recognize and utilize the elements of dance (space, action, time, relationships and dynamics) in a performance to create meaning.
Years 2 and 6, as well as 5/6E have had a “dramatic” semester as they have been telling stories by using the elements of role, movement, space, voice, tension and mood. Year 2 students re-enacted popular stories using their improvisation skills and imagination. Year 6 students used the elements of drama to devise and perform documentary dramas and 5/6E devised and performed melodramas that included heroes, villains and damsels.
I have enjoyed helping students express their creative side and look forward to a semester full of music! Thank you for a great semester Calliope!
Miss Williams (Arts and Music Teacher)
Welcome to Week 9!
This week’s PBL focus is Sun safety. Students will be investigating safety information regarding the sun and UV rays. They will learn some strategies around keeping safe in the sun and will discuss why we have safety expectations at school around this.
Teachers will be making a point of noticing students with hats on in the playground and will be giving out stamps to reward them. These stamps will go toward the whole class stamp charts.
Wednesday of Week 10 we will hold our PBL Celebration Colour Run. The colour run will take place on the front oval from 1:45. An invite will be sent out with further details and what to bring.
Congratulations to 6A who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 8. Their attendance rate was 98.18% for the Week!
Also, congratulations to the 3 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 6.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Calliope's Wide World of Sport
Last Friday, about thirty of our Calliope students competed at the Country Coast Athletic 10-12 years trials at Boyne Island SS.
What a day our Calliope athletes had, bringing in ribbon after ribbon in both field and track events.
It was ‘edge of your seat’ competition when they announced before the sprint finals that there was only one point in it between Tannum SS and Calliope SS as to who would win the Country Coast trophy, and WOW, Calliope kids can run!!
Calliope State School were overall winners of the Country Coast Athletics Carnival 2022. This trophy has not been won by Calliope since 1994, and before that 1987.
What an awesome effort from all our athletes! Congratulations!

Pizza Day
Year 3 – 6 pizza day was also a success. A massive thank you to our tuckshop ladies and all volunteers involved for making this fundraiser possible. And of course to Pizza Place Calliope for their continued support to our school.
QKR
Over the last week we have been several issues with QKR when ordering tuckshop. We would like to take the moment to thank everyone for their patience while we try resolve the issues with this. Unfortunately things like this do arise and are completely out of our control. In the future, if possible, if you can order ahead of time to ease congestion in the mornings as this can cause QKR to malfunction.
Uniform Shop
Uniform shop orders on QKR can take up to 3 business days to fill after day of order. These items are then taken to the office and the students are contacted to collect. If you haven’t received your uniform order please check, if it has been 3 days, that its not in your child’s school bag ( we all have that one child :p ) and that its not in the classroom. Please remember if you have any concerns the admin ladies are probably unlikely to be able to solve them, contact us via our Facebook page or email uniformshop.calliopess@gmail.com
Volunteer Reminder
I would like to take this moment to remind everyone that we are volunteers, we are parents, we are employed by other organisations or companies and that unfortunately, although it would be amazing, we do not have endless hours in the day. Please when contacting us be patient, be polite and be kind. We know it may be frustrating not getting a response straight away however please understand you are not being ignored, we just may be busy and will get to it as soon as possible. If you would like to help lighten the load and volunteer please reach out we would love to have you on board.
Please don’t hesitate to stop us and say hi and ask questions.

Port to Park FunD Run
The Port to Park fun run is back for 2022! Gladstone Ports Corporation’s (GPC) Port to Park FunD Run can help us raise funds for our school community and we’d love as many of our students and families to participate on Sunday 21 August.
The event will run in GPC's beautiful parklands, highlighting all three areas - East Shores, The Gladstone Marina and Spinnaker Park.
There will be two race events for participants to choose from including the 9 kilometre Koongo Dash and the 3 kilometre Yallarm Family Run. Both race names recognise the language of the Traditional Owners of the land - the Bailai and Gooreng Gooreng nations, with Koongo meaning place of water and Yallarm meaning place of shells.
Students can register to participate in Port to Park as individuals or with their family for the 3km and/or 9km events and their registration fee will be directed back to our school. Make sure you nominate Calliope State School as your school when registering!
If you register before Sunday 19 June using the code P2PEARLY you can receive a 10% discount.
