COVID-19 UPDATE
A Few Important Reminders - Stay informed as things can change quickly when it comes to COVID-19. Please make sure you regularly check the Queensland Government website, which has up-to-date information on the lockdown, including all restrictions and maps of the affected areas.
Lost Property
Our lost property baskets are overflowing, most of which is clothing and in particular jumpers. If your child/ren have lost items recently, I would encourage you to come and have a look before or after school.
Bike Racks
If your child/children use the bike racks, I would highly encourage you to ensure that they lock their equipment such as bikes/scooters. The bike racks are provided for the convenience of students to place their bikes/scooters whilst they attend school; however, we are unable to provide resources to supervise the bike rack area all of the time.
Horse Paddock
Please remind your children that the horse paddock that is adjacent to the back of the school is private property. If your child enters this property they are trespassing and therefore they are committing an offence. The property owner/leaser is in their right to call police. We have added extra staff on duty this term on the back oval and have the leadership team out on duty at each break as well to support students in making the right decisions. We would be grateful if you could also have a conversation with your child/ren and remind them of the repercussions that may occur if they are to enter this property.

TOLL Gladstone
I want to extend a huge thank you to TOLL Gladstone for donating their time and resources to pick up and deliver a large, heavy item to our school for one of our students. The staff, the family involved and the student are very appreciative of your kind gesture. THANK YOU!
School Opinion Survey 2021
To date we have only had a 26% response rate which will not give us very comprehensive feedback about our school. Thank you to all of those who have already completed the Parent/Caregiver Survey. If you have not had a chance to complete the survey yet, please note that the online surveys will remain open until Friday, 6 August 2021. This is your opportunity to provide feedback about what our school does well and how we can improve.
To have your say, check your email for an invitation from the Department of Education titled School Opinion Survey for parents and caregivers, 2021.
Can’t find your invitation? If your family has more than one parent/caregiver, check that they haven’t received the invitation and/or check your junk email folder.

CALLIOPE STATE SCHOOL STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT
Considering Individual Circumstances When Making A Disciplinary Decision
Principals have the authority to apply a school disciplinary absence (SDA) to any student enrolled at their school. An SDA may be used by a principal if they consider the behaviour of a student at school, after school hours or on the weekend, meets one of the grounds specified in the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006 (Qld). When making decisions about applying an SDA, principals consider the student’s individual circumstances, their actions and the needs and rights of school community members. Taking into account individual circumstances means principals consider a student’s behaviour history, disability, mental health and wellbeing, religious and cultural considerations, home environment and care arrangements prior to making a decision. In considering the individual circumstances of each student, it is recognised that the way we teach, the support we provide and the way we respond to each student will vary depending on the specific needs of the student and the situation. This reflects the principle of equity, where every student is given the support they need to be successful. For example, some students need additional support to interpret or understand an expectation. Others may benefit from more opportunities to practise a required skill or behaviour. For a small number of students, the use of certain disciplinary consequences may be considered inappropriate or ineffective due to complex trauma or family circumstances. These are all matters that teachers and principals consider with each individual student in both the instruction of behaviour and the response to behaviour. Taking individual circumstances into account is aligned with the principles of procedural fairness and natural justice. Concurrent obligations such as those associated with the Human Rights Act 2019 (Qld) and Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) must also be considered when making disciplinary decisions.
INCLUSIVE EDUCATION
Supports for Students from Diverse Backgrounds
Students with Disability
The Department of Education is committed to ensuring every student with disability succeeds and is achieving their full potential. We are committed to continuing our journey towards a more inclusive education system where students of all abilities can:
Who are students with disability? Disability is defined in the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cwth) and the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld). It includes a range of disabilities, including learning disabilities and health conditions. All disabilities, conditions or disorders can have an impact on the student’s functioning at school in a variety of ways. The student’s disability may be lifelong or temporary and strengths, interests and needs will be different for each student and may change for a student during the year and as they grow. Schools collect information about students with disability in the annual Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) . This collection helps schools to identify, monitor and make reasonable adjustments for students with disability. You can learn more about the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cwth) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005 (Cwth) on the NCCD website and more about the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld) on the Queensland Government website.

3A have been busy bees these first three weeks back in Term 3!
We have been busy reading The Lorax and discussing the importance of taking care of our environment. We have followed through with this theme in Technology and have emptied the Lost Property cages and tallied the number of jumpers, water bottles and lunch boxes there. Surprisingly there was only one school hat!! We are doing good in one area!
We have been busy playing with money in Maths and discovering multiple ways of making a dollar with a variety of coins. Our next step is to calculate change.
Last Thursday we joined 3B for a ballet workshop and had fun learning about the elements of dance and choreographing our own moves. Everyone participated! What a success!
In Science we are investigating heat and having a go at using thermometers. We are very careful and write up risks involved and carefully follow instructions.
We have also been quite busy earning group points to get a special prize at the end of the week.

Student’s Social & Emotional Wellbeing
Students Baking at the HUB
On Thursday, Jaydyn and Brian got the opportunity to attend the HUB and participate in some cooking time with Miss Shannyn. They made a very delicious and outstanding marble cake which used lots of different techniques taught my Miss Shannyn. By allowing the students to cook, we are teaching the children three goals; learn, bake and share with a friend. It also contributes to the social and emotional wellbeing of the students within the school.
The boys had lots fun making this and enjoyed the outcome! Great work boys!

Congratulations to Year 5/6D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 3. Their attendance rate was 97.6% for the week!
Also congratulations to the 9 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 3.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost
At Calliope State School we offer before school and lunch break alternate activities to keep our students active and engaged. There are only a couple of changes from last term, including morning yoga and lego at first break. A reminder that the Student Wellbeing Centre is open from 8:30 and available at both lunch breaks.
