WELCOME
As the new Acting Principal, it is a privilege to have been so welcomed by the staff, students and community here at Calliope State School since I arrived last Wednesday! As someone who has grown up in the local Gladstone area, it is an exciting opportunity to be a Principal at this school. Prior to taking up this position I was working as the Principal of Miriam Vale State School and previous to that I was the Deputy Principal at the new Calliope State High School. I have spent a large part of my career working as a Principal Education Officer, leading Curriculum, Teaching and Learning across the Central Queensland Region.
My husband and I have a ‘blended’ family with 4 children between us; an adult daughter, 18-year-old boy (recently graduated Year 12), 15-year-old girl (Year 11) and 11-year-old boy (Year 7). As a family we love to go four-wheel driving and camping/caravanning on weekends and during school holidays. I am a fanatical Cowboys fan and my husband is a fanatical Broncos fan, so NRL season in our household is always filled with excitement.
I look forward to developing a productive partnership with staff, students and parents in the time that I am here to ensure that all students can achieve their highest potential and experience individual success.
LENS CLEANER FOR GLASSES
Students are not permitted to bring spray lens cleaner to school to clean their glasses as it poses a safety risk. I encourage you to ensure that your child/ren clean their glasses with the spray lens cleaner before leaving home in the morning. Whilst in the school grounds, students are encouraged to clean their glasses with a soft, lint free cloth, generally supplied by the optometrist when purchasing the glasses.
SCHOOL PHOTOS THURSDAY AND FRIDAY
A reminder that school photos are happening on Thursday and Friday this week. Students are to wear the Calliope State School uniform – no sports shirts or Year 6 shirts on these days please.
BULLYING. NO WAY!
Last Friday, as a school community, we formally recognise Bullying. No Way! Friday was a National Day of Action where schools, students and the community come together against Bullying and Violence and say Bullying. No Way! The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is Australia’s key initiative in preventing bullying by connecting schools and communities to find workable solutions to bullying and violence.

DISCO
I want to thank the P&C for the time and effort they put in to planning for, delivering and cleaning up after the school Disco last Thursday night. The students really did appreciate the opportunity to interact with and have some fun with their friends outside of the formal school day. I would also like to thank the school staff for offering their time to supervise the students on the night. Such events can not go ahead without many people volunteering their time. Thank you!

Regards
Coralie Ditchmen, Acting Principal.
Prep A has had a busy start to their first year of school. We have been very engaged in investigations and learning the routines of school life. We have had fun being scientists, learning about living things and have gone hunting for them in the playground. We have learned about how to care for pets and have enjoyed imaginative play in our vet surgery. We have worked together to come up with fun ideas about each of the letters that we have learned and the children have had a voice in the choices of activities we do for the craft activities for each letter each week. It has been a great start to the year and there will be many more exciting things happening in the rest of the year.
Congratulations to 5/6D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 8. Their attendance rate was 98% for the week! Also congratulations to the 13 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 8. Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Positive Behaviour for Learning!
PBL Data Term 1 Week 8
Lesson Week 9
Respecting Others’ Belongings
Focus: Teach students about personal responsibility.
Objective: Students will learn skills involved with respecting others’ belongings.
Calliope Wide World of Sports with Mrs Betts!
This term, our Calliope U10 football team represented our school at the PJ Marsh Cup competition. The boys played awesome games in the sweltering heat and came third place overall. I was super proud of the team spirit and sportsmanship on the day. All players gave their best and played well.
A big congratulations to Mason Mc, Parks and Kellan who made the Capricornia team (Only 13 were selected out of the 160 boys who played on the day).
Last week, Leo Rays travelled to Moranbah to represent Port Curtis in the Capricornia AFL trials. He played well and was a true winner the way he conducted himself, working with and encouraging his Port Curtis team mates.
On Wednesday afternoons, our three Calliope girls, Mikayla, Krystal and Jenna participated in the Chelsea Baker Cup competition. The girls won the Cup with their

Age Grouping
Most students will run in their respective age groups not in year levels. An example here would be if a student in Year 4 were turning 10 this year then he or she would run with students in Year 5 as most students in Year 5 would be turning 10 this year.
Distances for Age Groups
- Prep year will run their small course. (approx. 500m)
- Grade 1 will run their small course. (approx. 500m)
- Grade 2 will run their small course. (approx. 500m)
- Grade 3 will run 1 lap of the course. (approx. 900m)
- 9 year olds will run 1 lap of the course (approx. 900m)
- 10 year olds will run 2 laps of the course (approx. 1800m)
- 11 year olds will run 3 laps of the course (approx. 2700m)
- 12 year olds will run 3 laps of the course (approx. 2700m)
Port Curtis Selections
Only 10, 11 and 12 year olds are eligible for Port Curtis selection. 9 year olds competing in our School Cross Country are gaining practice for next year when they are eligible for selection. I will advise these students of dates, distances and venues as I receive them. The top five students from each category are eligible to compete at the Port Curtis Cross Country Friday 30th April 2021.
Student Preparation
Remind students on the day before to bring their hats, a water bottle and wear good covered shoes that they can run in (no skate shoes, boots etc.). Remind students that this is a fun event with an emphasis on participation not competition.
What do you like to do at lunchtime?
The hard question this week was favourite activities at lunchtime. Jenna from 5B says that eating was her favourite past time at first break, it was nice to sit with friends and catch up. The year 6’s like to catch up with friends from other classrooms. Hanging on the back oval is also a favourite past time. The Green Zone is an awesome place if you find the playground or oval too overwhelming. If you like quiet time head to the library. We cater for all lunchtime needs at Calliope.
Hello Calliope families, we would like to officially welcome our new Acting Principal to our school, Mrs Coralie Ditchman. We hope that you enjoy your time here and we look forward to collaborating with you.
Thank you to everyone who attended our first school disco for the year. It was a great night and we loved watching the kids dance and play to the music. A huge thank you to the staff who helped out and to the parents who volunteered their time. Some parents even offered to help when they saw we needed an extra set of hands. We really appreciate the support and these events are not possible without you.
