It has been a very busy start to 2021.
In Science, 1B are starting to explore animals and their habitats. We have been looking at what an animal needs to survive (food, air water, shelter) and how different habitats cater to different animal needs. We thought it would be very funny to see polar bears on our oval instead of kangaroos!
We have also put on our detective hats and become spelling code masters over the last couple of weeks! We are getting very good at knowing that black letters are consonants and magenta letters are our vowel sounds.

Week 3 is well underway and it is lovely to see how well everyone has settled back into school life for 2021. I have enjoyed visiting the classrooms, sharing ‘Good News’ letters with students, looking at amazing work from students and even being able to make some good news phone calls to parents about the fabulous work their child shared with me. Parent Meetings
It was lovely to see parents attending the Class Parent Information Sessions this week. The teachers are able to share their classroom routines and expectations with you. We still have several sessions to go this week, see timetable below. Class newsletters are also currently being sent home from all the classes with information about Term 1.
Life Education
Later in the term we will welcome Life Education to Calliope State School. Life Education happens every two years at the school. All classes will have the opportunity to attend the session with the Life Education educator. The cost will be $6.00 per child and more information will be sent home in the next few weeks.
Parent Volunteer workshops
We look forward to inviting parents back into classrooms to assist with a variety of activities. All volunteers are now required to attend a mandatory training workshop before they are able to assist in classrooms / tuckshop etc. There are two sessions offered over the next week: Thursday 11 February at 9.15am and Monday 15 February at 4.00pm.
Another session will be offered later in the term, so please give feedback about suitable times if you are unable to make either of the earlier times.
P&C Meeting tonight
Reading
Reading continues to be a focus area at Calliope State School in 2021. There are many ways to support your child with reading, but one of the best ways is to just to share a book with your child/children. You can read the book to your child, they can read to you, or you can both read parts of the book. It might be a picture book each night, a favourite book or a chapter book that can be read over a number of weeks. Students are always welcome to borrow books from the school library to take home as well.

Time Out
We have been contacted by a family about a confirmed case of Hand Foot and Mouth disease. We follow the Department of Health ‘Time Out’ guidelines that meet the requirements of the Public Health Act 2005. Please see the Time Out recommendations for a variety of illness attached to this newsletter.
Student Leaders
This Friday on parade, we will have the pleasure of presenting our 2021 School Leaders with their badges. Our leaders have started the year well, already presenting at parade. We look forward to their work within the school this year.

PBL Data Term 1 Week 2
Parents and the wider community play an important role in creating a safe and supportive school environment. Schools benefit when school staff engage in regular positive, respectful interactions with their students and family.
Parents are valuable partners in supporting the school and their child's learning and behaviour. Parents have valuable insights about how to best support the child's behaviour and learning. We have our first PBL meeting for 2021 on Wednesday 10 Feb at 3.30pm (Conference Room) and we invite parents to come along.
Calliope State School - Wide World of Sports
Welcome back everyone!
Term 1 is a very busy term! We have a variety of different sporting events that are approaching very quickly. We kick off the year with the PJ Marsh Rugby League competition and the NRL Development Cup (U12s Inter-school Rugby League competition).
Throughout Term 1, Port Curtis trials will be held for several different sports. I will announce PC trials as they are coming up and hold lunchtime training sessions for students interested in trying out. Just a reminder, Port Curtis trials are for representative level, so students need to demonstrate a high level of skill at a representative level.
There will be opportunities throughout the year for students to try out for school teams to play and represent our school at interschool competitions. Many of these interschool competitions like Netball, Touch Football and Soccer do not start until Term 3. I will let students know as they come up.
The ‘Great Calliope Skip Off’ competition will also be on again this term. I will be opening the hall in the mornings for students to come along and practise their skipping. To make it in to the competition at the end of term, students will have to make it on the ‘1 Minute Wall of Fame’.
The end of term will see us out with our annual Cross Country Carnival. I will be starting running training on Friday mornings down on the front oval at 8:30am. All students are welcome to come join in.
Please remind your children to check the PE notice board located outside the office for any upcoming events and other important information. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I am looking forward to what 2021 will bring! My email contact is: cbett49@eq.edu.au
