Welcome Back! It is with great pleasure that I welcome you back to school for Term 4. We officially farewell Mr Mark Wright as our Principal and thank him for his positive impact on Calliope State School during his three years here. Under his leadership, the school has continued to grow and improve. This is a journey the Leadership Team are committed to continuing into the future. Our three improvement areas of WELLBEING, CURRICULUM and PEDAGOGY, with an explicit focus on the improvement in the area of READING will be reviewed by the Education Improvement Branch later this term. We look forward to having them visit and share their insights with us. A number of schools in the Gladstone region have undertaken their reviews this year and all have reported it to be an overwhelmingly positive and supportive experience to help their school continue their improvement journey. Information regarding the Human Rights Act 2019 Our new Student Code of Conduct incorporates the new Human Rights Act 2019. The Human Rights Act 2019 commenced in its entirety on 1 January 2020 and provides a mechanism for all Queenslanders to ensure that public entities, including state schools, act only in a way that is consistent with the protection of human rights. In schools, one of the areas that will require careful consideration is decisions that impact a student’s right to education, such as suspension or exclusion. The decision to suspend or exclude a student from school is a complex activity that has always required principals to balance the rights of an individual student with the need of the school to provide a safe environment for all members of the school community. The introduction of the Human Rights Act 2019 emphasises the importance of considering the rights of the student, including appropriately documenting the decision, and, where a student’s rights are being limited, for example by suspending them from attending school, providing evidence that this action is lawful, justified and reasonable. The recent revision of all student discipline procedures, including the introduction of new resources such as flowcharts and checklists, is designed to help ensure that principals are able to demonstrate that their decisions are consistent with the Human Rights Act 2019. We will be running focus sessions in Term 4 to work in partnership with our parent and community to finalise the development of our Student Code of Conduct. This will replace our current Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students. Please keep an eye out for how you can be involved. Opportunity for new Instrumental Music students! Feedback We are always open to feedback as this helps our school to continuously grow and improve. There are many appropriate ways to provide feedback to our school and we appreciate the time and effort people have taken to ensure they are using these avenues. At the moment we have modified some of our avenues for providing feedback. The most effective way in this present situation is to email our admin@calliopess.eq.edu.au email address or via a phone call. Kindest Regards, Rebecca Crapp A/Principal |
Congratulations to 6D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 10. Their attendance rate was 97% for the week! Also congratulations to the 5 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 10. Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
The average attendance data for each class for all of Term 3 has been calculated. The classes with the best attendance data for Term 3 are 5A, 5B, 6B and 6D. They all had 93% attendance for the term. Congratulations to all four classes for leading the way with our attendance.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Welcome to Term 4 everyone. In order to start the term off on the right foot the Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson this week is: Responsible – My body is ready for learning. Having our bodies ready for learning helps immensely when it comes to saving academic learning time, and students can demonstrate this behaviour by doing the following:
- Be lined up quietly at the start of each session;
- Ensure they have all the necessary equipment ready for the lessons;
- Have our hats in our bags and a full water bottle ready to go;
- Have been to the toilet during break time; and,
- Stand apart from the student in front, behind and besides us to ensure there is no disruption to the lining up process.
Please take a moment to remind your child/children about how to prepare their bodies for learning to help set them up for success in Term 4.
Calliope State School has a number of cool lunchtime activities on this term for kids to engage with at break time, from dancing, to arts and crafts, to student vs teacher games. Below are some photos from one of the activities, a handball tournament in the hall on Wednesday’s and Thursday’s.
Thanks.

Welcome to Term 4. Our P&C hope that our Calliope families and staff have had a spectacular holiday, whether you’ve been at home, enjoying time together as a family or out, exploring this glorious state that we call home. It’s hard to believe that after a turbulent first 3 terms, we are now on the home stretch to Christmas. Goodluck to everyone for a fabulous term of great attendance, being engaged in learning and most of all, FUN!
We return to school today with Mrs C as our Acting Principal until the end of 2020. On behalf of our whole parent body, we wish you all the best with your new role and we are confident you will lead our school extremely well. We can’t wait to continue working with you to ensure our school is well supported.

Mental Health Week is internationally recognised and happens between Sunday 10 October and Saturday 17 October this year. The aim of Mental Health Week is to increase the mental health of all through encouraging healthy coping behaviours, reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and fostering positive relationships. We see the week as a wonderful opportunity to promote skills which help prepare students to deal with the ups and downs of life.
The theme for Mental Health Australia’s day this year is ‘Take Time’ for Mental Health. In thinking about this theme, it is evident that schools and classes could choose many different ways to promote the mental health of those in their community. At Calliope State School, we have chosen to focus on a specific aspect of individual wellbeing, taking time out for yourself and each other. We have arranged a week full of activities for the staff and students, where they can take time for themselves or join in with their friends to have a good time.
