Welcome to Week 3!
It is great to see how our students have settled back into their schooling this term and their excitement as they have commenced their new units of study.
Last week you should have received your child’s report card for Semester One via email and this week, teachers are conducting phone parent/teacher interviews. This is the ideal time to talk with your child’s teacher to get feedback on their learning and share any concerns you may have.
Key things to ask your child’s teacher:
- What are my child’s interests and strengths?
- What does my child struggle with?
- What can I do at home to help my child with schoolwork?
- What can you tell me about my child’s behaviour in class/ the playground?
- How is my child getting along with other students?
- What support services are available for my child at this school?
Social Media ESafety
With a growing amount of people accessing online platforms, it is important that we all know what to do when online to keep ourselves and our children safe. The esafety website has a huge range of resources for parents to use with children. There is also the option to report inappropriate online behaviours- eg: on social media sites etc.
Remember that there are age recommendations for all online social media platforms- Facebook, snapchat, tik tok etc. due to the risks.
As a school, we do not support the use of the online media platforms for primary aged children for the risk it poses and also the flow on effects that inappropriate use has on student wellbeing and lost learning time.
Check out the website for more information https://www.esafety.gov.au/
Congratulations 100 Days of Prep!
We were excited to celebrate 100 days of school with our Prep students last week. Some (particularly their teachers) have aged quickly!
Travel to and from School
We ask that parents who allow their children to travel to and from school by walking or on bikes, scooters etc talk with their children around safe behaviours on the pathways and when crossing roads.
Students on ‘wheels’ are encouraged to wear a helmet, keep to the left of the path and hop off before crossing roads.
Remember it is a parent’s responsibility to supervise your children to and from school, however whilst wearing our uniform students are still representing our school and we can enact our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students when required.
If you observe unsafe behaviours, you are encouraged to contact the police or the school when our students are involved.
Have a fantastic week and let’s keep up our good health!
Regards
This term, 2C are looking at procedural texts. They have been reading recipes and writing some of their own. Look at some of their creative recipe posters.
ICAS 2020 – Years 2-6
Each year the University of NSW conducts assessment tasks (competitions) for children across the South Pacific in a variety of subjects. The objective of these competitions is to help parents gauge the progress of their child against children in Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. These competitions are not compulsory but are open to families willing to pay the cost to have their child participate in the task.
There are a variety of competitions to enter. Parents can enter their children in as many of these as they choose. We encourage parents to talk to their children to consider taking on this challenge. Children should consider tackling the subjects they demonstrate confidence in. eg: if they’re good spellers, try the spelling competition. We will be offering the competition to students in years 2-6. All tasks are online.
Once again our P and C is recognising the achievements of students in last year’s testing by sponsoring the cost of those students in the tests that they were successful in. Those students receiving this sponsorship were emailed their letters last week.
Any other students who would like to complete an ICAS test will require entry/permission forms. All forms are to be emailed home and emailed back to school for 2020. If forms are required, please email Kylie Kettle at kkett3@eq.edu.au for them.
Payment is required by Friday 3 August

Weekly Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Welcome to Week 3. The Positive Behaviour for Learning lesson this week is: Respectful – Following Teacher Instructions Straight Away. One of the key messages students need to understand is that there is always a reason behind the instruction they are given. Adults give instructions for a number of reasons, and these include:
- to help students continue with their work;
- to help them make good choices;
- to help keep them safe; and,
- to avoid potential problems that an adult can see.
Fantastic Fun Friday was on last week and the theme was ‘Free Dress!’ Well done to everyone who submitted their stamp chart and displayed Safe, Respectful and Responsible behaviour. We are still waiting on restrictions being lifted so Fantastic Fun Friday can return to the hall and will keep you posted.
Have a good week.
Thanks.

Student Welfare Teacher
It was so lovely to see Calliope State School students wearing pink to support the McGrath Foundation this morning. We hope the staff and students have a fantastic game of cricket today. Go student team!!!!
Tuckshop
This term, Tuckshop will be open First and Second Breaks, Tuesday through to Friday. We are still cashless, due to COVID procedures, so make sure you place all orders on the Flexischools App. Thank you to the school community who continue to support our Tuckshop.
Flexischools
We have found an alternative to Flexischools which is more user friendly for our families and our P&C. Throughout this term we will be transitioning to use QKR, but don’t worry, this will be a slow transition. For now, Flexischools is still in use and this is the best way to order your tuckshop and uniforms. We will keep you updated as the transition begins in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
Term 3 Fundraisers
Our P&C are currently confirming the fundraisers for the term. To stay up to date, you can follow our Facebook page – Calliope State School P&C and continue to read our piece in the school newsletter each week.
