Welcome to Week Two of Term 4. Yesterday we had our first P&C meeting for the term and it was great to see several parents attend the meeting. I was able to share some of the key aspects of the School Opinion Survey with the P&C last night. Please see the P&C section of this newsletter for exciting events coming up.
2024 Planning
Planning for classes in 2024 begins early in Term 4. Our first step finalise our anticipated enrolments for 2024. If you know of families considering Calliope State School in 2024, please encourage them to contact Administration as soon as possible. Any family who has a Prep student commencing in 2024 is encouraged to contact Administration now to ensure a smooth transition to school. If your family intends on leaving our school next year, could you please notify Administration so that this planning can be as accurate as possible.
STAFFING
Jaimee Bratz commenced on Prep B yesterday. Initially Jaimee will work 4 days a week on class. Robyn Jurd will continue on Prep B, working Mondays. Jade Randall will continue to be 3/4D’s classroom teacher for the remainder of this year. The school will not have a Student Wellbeing Teacher for the remainder of the year.
We are continuing to seek a Chaplain for our school. Our Guidance Officer position has now become a permanent vacancy and will be advertised soon.
Dress Code
Each week I am highlighting a component of our school Dress Code.
This week I am highlighting our student uniform. It has been great to see so many of our students wearing the correct uniform. Our staff have been so impressed with students when they are together at assembly on Friday’s. Please come and see us if you are struggling with any aspect of the uniform. We are here to help.
Student Code of Conduct
Each week I focus on an aspect of Calliope’s Student Code of Conduct. This week the focus is on Anti-Bullying Compact
Calliope State School – Anti-Bullying Compact
The Anti-Bullying Compact provides a clear outline of the way our community at Calliope State School works together to establish a safe, supportive and disciplined school environment. This compact is provided to all students and their parents upon enrolment, and may be revisited with individual students if particular problems around bullying arise.
Calliope State School – Anti Bullying Compact
We agree to work together to improve the quality of relationships in our community at Calliope State School. It is through intentional consideration of our behaviour and communication that we can reduce the occurrence of bullying, and improve the quality of the schooling experience for everyone.
The agreed national definition for Australian schools describes bullying as
- ongoing and deliberate misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that intends to cause physical, social and/or psychological harm;
- involving an individual or a group misusing their power, or perceived power, over one or more persons who feel unable to stop it from happening;
- happening in person or online, via various digital platforms and devices and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying behaviour is repeated, or has the potential to be repeated, over time (for example, through sharing of digital records);
- having immediate, medium and long-term effects on those involved, including bystanders. Single incidents and conflict or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying.
We believe that no one deserves to be mistreated and that everyone regardless of race, colour, religion, immigration status, nationality, size, gender, popularity, athletic capability, academic outcomes, social ability, or intelligence has the right to feel safe, secure, and respected.
I agree to:
- Treat everyone with kindness and respect.
- Abide by the school’s anti-bullying policies and procedures.
- Support individuals who have been bullied.
- Speak out against verbal, relational, physical bullying and cyber bullying.
- Notify a parent, teacher, or school administrator when bullying does occur.

Congratulations to Mia our little ‘Wakeboarding Champ!’
Mia recently competed in the Mackay - Rumble on the Reef U13 division and was the youngest competitor in the group. She placed 2nd and was super stoked.
Earlier in the year Mia also competed in the Boardstock competition at Bli Bli where she placed 1st in “King of the Kickers” U10 girls along with 1st in the features only comp. What a cool sport! Go Mia!

RotaKids are collecting non-perishable grocery items to create Christmas Hampers for local families in need. We are working with Strong Communities in the creation and distribution to families. Our goal is to fill 20 baskets. If you are able to donate items, please place them in the container that is located at the office. If you work for a local business and would like to support this cause please contact Amanda Whale (RotaKids Leader) awhal20@eq.edu.au.
Congratulations to 3/4D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 1. Their attendance rate was 97.72% for the Week!
Also, congratulations to the 5 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 1.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Hello everyone! We had a wonderful and productive P&C meeting last night. Thanks to everyone who attended; it was great to see you all there! Items discussed include; future fundraisers, this term’s calendar of events and we heard from Mrs Mackenzie on results from the recent School Opinion Survey and how this is applied to next year’s strategic planning. There is still a lot going on as this term progresses into planning for 2024! Mrs Mackenzie and our P&C President and Vice President will be getting their heads together as part of the strategic planning process. If you have any specific feedback or opportunities for improvement that you wish shared with our school’s amazing leadership team, please send an email directly to Heidi and/or Geoff on:
president.calliopess@gmail.com and vicepresident.calliopess@gmail.com.
Who loves a democratic sausage?? We certainly do!! This Saturday is referendum day and our school hall is an AEC polling place. So what a fantastic opportunity to hold a democratic sausage sizzle fundraiser! We hope to be offering snags on bread from 10am. We are also very excited that the QCWA Calliope branch will be joining us with a baking and jams stall! If you have an hour to spare on Saturday at some time between 10am and 3pm and can lend a hand; please drop us an email. If not and you’re doing the mad dash in and out; make sure you still pop in and see us for some goodies when casting your vote.
Our final fundraiser for this year will be a Christmas raffle, drawn on parade in Week 9. We have a very special P&C member, Crystal, who has gone above and beyond securing some amazing prizes and vouchers to ensure this fundraiser is a success! Watch this space and our Facebook page (don’t forget to like us while you’re there) for more details on prizes on offer and ticket sales. In the meantime, if any of our families have businesses and wish to make a donation; please send us an email on the details below. We would greatly appreciate anything on offer and as always; all profits from our fundraisers go straight back into funding educational ventures and experiences for all of our wonderful students.
Feel free to contact us about anything at all on: communication.calliopess@gmail.com for our Communication Officer or pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au for our Executive team.
Warm regards,
Heidi, Geoff, Angela and Lisa.
We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out by going to the Administration building and signing out on the iPad, collecting a slip and presenting it to the classroom teacher.
These processes are in place so that the teachers and school staff are aware of the movement of students at school. This is for the protection and welfare of all staff and students. It is important to look at the impact that late arrival and early departure have on a student/s education and those around them. It is not only disruptive to learning that is occurring in the classrooms at the time of arrival and departure, it is all time that accumulates to missed opportunities for learning. A student who is arriving late or leaving early by 15 minutes twice a week will miss, in total, the equivalent of 4 days of school across the year.
We ask parents to assist us by checking their message bank before returning calls to the school, to establish which staff member has phoned. Due to the high volume of staff within our school it is not possible for us to identify who may have called you. Please call the member on their direct number if they have provided this as this will free up the office phone lines.
Donations - The office is chasing donations of size 10 to size 14 school black shorts. If you have any that your child has grown out off, we are more than happy to receive them in the office for students.
Thank you for your help.
