Welcome to Week Five. Over the course of the week, I have been delighted to meet many students and staff at this wonderful school. I was also privileged to attend last night’s P&C Meeting. This group of parents and carers are small but mighty, and all are very invested in building a positive relationship between school and home. I encourage you to come along to meet others, hear about the great things planned, and have your say about the future direction of Calliope State School. We are keen to work together with you. Thank you to our P&C for your dedication.
Our Book Week Parade will be held on Friday, 25th August at 9:15am. We understand that some students will be attending the Eisteddfod for their choir performance. We invite them to change into their Book Week costume on their return to school. I am very excited to see everyone dressed as their favourite book character.
Student Code of Conduct
Each week, we will focus on an aspect of Calliope’s Student Code of Conduct. This week the focus is the school’s, students’ and parents’ responsibilities with regards to supporting a safe and supportive environment and not permitting items that jeopardise the safety and wellbeing of our school community.
Responsibilities
State school staff at Calliope State School:
- do not require the student’s consent to search school property such as lockers, desks or laptops that are supplied to the student through the school;
- may seize a student’s bag where there is suspicion that the student has a dangerous item (for example, a knife) in their school bag, prior to seeking consent to search from a parent or calling the police;
- require consent from the student or parent to examine or otherwise deal with the temporarily removed student property. For example, staff who temporarily remove a mobile phone from a student are not authorised to unlock the phone or to read, copy or delete messages stored on the phone;
- understand that there may be emergency circumstances where it is necessary to search a student’s property without the student’s consent or the consent of the student’s parents (e.g. to access an EpiPen for an anaphylactic emergency);
- require consent from the student or parent to search the person of a student (e.g. pockets or shoes). If consent is not provided and a search is considered necessary, the police and the student’s parents should be called to make such a determination.
Parents of students at Calliope State School:
- ensure your children do not bring property onto schools grounds or other settings used by the school (e.g. camp, sporting venues) that:
- is prohibited according to the Calliope State School Student Code of Conduct;
- is illegal;
- puts the safety or wellbeing of others at risk;
- does not preserve a caring, safe, supportive or productive learning environment;
- does not maintain and foster mutual respect.
- collect temporarily removed student property as soon as possible after they have been notified by the principal or state school staff that the property is available for collection.
Students of Calliope State School:
- do not bring property onto school grounds or other settings used by the school (e.g. camp, sporting venues) that:
- is prohibited according to the Calliope State School Code of Conduct;
- is illegal;
- puts the safety or wellbeing of others at risk;
- does not preserve a caring, safe, supportive or productive learning environment;
- does not maintain and foster mutual respect.
- collect their property as soon as possible when advised by the Principal or state school staff it is available for collection.

This term in 1C we are having a lot of fun with our learning. With our spelling
words each week, we have been using group activities and engaging tasks to
make our learning exciting! For Maths we have been using hands on materials
and team challenges to allow us to learn lots of new counting and addition skills.
We have also been loving the new interactive whiteboard in our room and using
it in so many different ways to help us learn.
Congratulations to 2D who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 4. Their attendance rate was 96.84% for the week! Also, congratulations to the 3 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 4.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Hi everyone! Well that’s a wrap on our Pie and Lamington drive for this year. Thanks to everyone who supported this very tasty fundraiser! And a huge thank you to Lizzy’s Bakehouse for their amazing support and their wonderful assistance in getting all the pies to our families!
Best of luck to all the students performing in the upcoming Instrumental Eisteddfod! We are very pleased to have been able to subsidise the travel costs associated with getting our little musicians to the GECC for this wonderful performance opportunity.
We held our monthly P&C meeting last night. It was so great to see some new faces and welcome a new member. We spoke about 2024 senior shirts and some exciting new fundraising opportunities. Our leadership team gave us an update about things that are coming up around the school and informed us of some changes to the way the school will be reporting some aspects of our student’s progress in order to improve parent engagement. We also spoke about some of the many community grants on offer at the moment and about particular projects throughout our school that could benefit from these. Our amazing Grants Officer, Celisa, will be working hard on these over the next few months to try secure us some funds for specific uses and projects around the school for our children. We were also fortunate to have a local artist, Katrina Elliot, come along to tell us about some exciting Arts opportunities that our school could try get involved in. It was so wonderful to have a member of our wider community wanting to involve our students in community programs. Katrina has a Calliope Public Art Survey open, we will endeavour to pop this up on our Facebook page, for anyone who wishes to partake in this.
Our next meeting will be Tuesday September 12th, we would love to see you there and hear your opinions on similar topics that arise for discussion.
We can be contacted at any time for your thoughts and ideas on: communication.calliopess@gmail.com for our Communication Officer or pandc@calliopess.eq.edu.au for our Executive team.
Warm regards,
Heidi, Geoff, Angela and Lisa.
Prep Parent Interviews for 2024
2024 Prep Parent Interviews are now available.
If your child is attending Prep in 2024 at Calliope State School, interviews are now open for us to meet your family for 2024 intakes. Please contact the office on 49758333 for times and days available.
We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out by going to the Administration building and signing out on the iPad, collecting a slip and presenting it to the classroom teacher.
These processes are in place so that the teachers and school staff are aware of the movement of students at school. This is for the protection and welfare of all staff and students. It is important to look at the impact that late arrival and early departure have on a student/s education and those around them. It is not only disruptive to learning that is occurring in the classrooms at the time of arrival and departure, it is all time that accumulates to missed opportunities for learning. A student who is arriving late or leaving early by 15 minutes twice a week will miss, in total, the equivalent of 4 days of school across the year.
As you know, schools and classrooms are very busy places!
To ensure our students are fully engaged in their learning, and our office staff are able to complete their multitude of daily required tasks, we ask that parents communicate clearly with their child at the beginning of each day where you will be picking them up from in the afternoon.
As you can imagine it is extremely difficult for our office staff to field scores of phone calls asking for messages to be passed on to children regarding pick-up information.
Should you need to contact your children throughout the day, please do this via the office. These should be emergency situations only. Messages received after 1.45pm may not be acknowledged by the class in time, so please ensure children know their pick-up arrangements.
We ask parents to assist us by checking their message bank before returning calls to the school, to establish which staff member has phoned. Due to the high volume of staff within our school it is not possible for us to identify who may have called you. Please call the member on their direct number if they have provided this as this will free up the office phone lines.
Police would like to remind parents and caregivers that the areas marked in yellow below on the map are ‘No Stopping’ areas, which means that you can’t pull up and wait an extended period of time for a car to leave a car park or stop to drop your children off.
These areas are clearly signed and marked with a yellow line.
Also a reminder that the Stop, Drop and Go area is limited to 2 minutes for the loading and unloading of passengers. Police have and will continue to issue fines for vehicles stopped along the yellow lines and parked in the Stop, Drop and Go area for an extended period of time.
The maximum penalty for these offences is 20 penalty units (one penalty unit = $143.75) and can attract
3 demerit points.
To avoid the end of school traffic congestion, consider parking a bit further away and walking to collect your children or delaying pick up for 5 – 10 minutes.
Remember school staff will be at Stop, Drop and Go until 3:30pm.
Attention - Dental forms can be found on our webpage or in the office. The dental van sent out lots of letters during Week 10 of Term 2, these forms are to be returned ASAP for an appointment to be made and for the dental staff to see your child/children,this term.
- ARTICLES FOR OUR SCHOOL NEWSLETTER: If you wish to publish a NOT FOR PROFIT COMMUNITY article in our school newsletter you can do this by sending an email to admin@calliopess@eq.edu.au with all the relevant details. This will then go through our approval process prior to publishing.
- REMINDER TO PARENTS: Reminder to parents and visitors to the school to drive carefully when accessing the front entrance of the school. Please drive slowly, abide by the speed limit, normal road rules and be mindful of your surrounds. We appreciate your attention and understanding.
- COLLECTING YOUR STUDENT EARLY FROM SCHOOL: We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out by going to the Administration building signing out on the iPad, collect a slip and present it to the classroom teacher.

- RETURNING CALLS TO THE SCHOOL: We ask parents to assist us by checking their message bank before returning calls to the school, to establish which staff member has phoned.
