Welcome to Week 9 – last night our P&C met. Many aspects of our school are discussed at P&C. Did you know that P&C raise funds to support all our students? The P&C also manage our Tuckshop and make decisions around purchases and menus. Our next P&C Meeting is Week 2 of Term 3 at 5:30 pm. Please add this to your diary if you would like to join our P&C.
Student Code of Conduct
Each week I will focus on an aspect of Calliope’s Student Code of Conduct. This week the focus is Disciplinary Consequences.
The disciplinary consequences model used at Calliope State School follows the same differentiated approach used in the proactive teaching and support of student behavioural expectations.
The majority of students will be confident and capable of meeting established expectations that are clear, explicitly taught and practised. In-class corrective feedback, sanctions and rule reminders may be used by teachers to respond to low-level or minor problem behaviours.
Some students will need additional support, time and opportunities to practise expected behaviours. Approximately 15% of the student population may experience difficulty with meeting the stated expectations, and even with focussed teaching, in-class corrective feedback, sanctions and rule reminders continue to display low-level problem behaviour. A continued pattern of low-level behaviour can interfere with teaching and learning for the whole class, and a decision may be needed by the class teacher to refer the student to the school administration team immediately for determination of a disciplinary consequence.
For a small number of students, approximately 2-5%, a high level of differentiated support or intensive teaching is required to enable them to meet the behavioural expectations. This may be needed throughout the school year on a continuous basis. The determination of the need will be made by the principal in consultation with staff and other relevant stakeholders. On occasion the behaviour of a student may be so serious, such as causing harm to other students or to staff, that the principal may determine that an out of school suspension or exclusion is necessary as a consequence for the student’s behaviour. Usually this course of action is only taken when the behaviour is either so serious as to warrant immediate removal of the student for the safety of others, and no other alternative discipline strategy is considered sufficient to deal with the problem behaviour.
The differentiated responses to problem behaviour can be organised into three tiers, with increasing intensity of support and consequences to address behaviour that endangers others or causes major, ongoing interference with class or school operations.
Upcoming Events Calendar
Some reminders of upcoming events from the calendar include –
Week 9 – Zone Athletics
Week 10 – Under 8’s
Week 10 – NAIDOC Week Celebration
Paren
t and Community Code of Conduct
Parents and other visitors to schools support safety by ensuring their communications and conduct at the school and school activities is respectful.
Approaching other students in the school grounds to discuss concerns with them is not appropriate in any school. Please refer to the Parent and Community Code of Conduct and request a meeting to discuss any concerns about your child’s education – allowing staff time to prepare and appreciating our time may be limited.
Thank you to all the School Support Staff
This week we celebrate our School Support staff. We thank our cleaners, office staff, grounds officer and school technician for their amazing work at Calliope State School.
This term 6C has been working on all core subjects within the classroom. They have been exploring two novels written by Elizabeth Honey, BODMAS, Natural Disasters and Federation. We have been working with 4A each Friday for buddies, looking at You Can Do It and Resilience activities. All students are engaging well and developing their social and emotional skills. They are continuing to build on their knowledge to be independent and active learners while utilising ICT, in preparation for high school.
Congratulations to 3B who had an amazing attendance rate for week 8. Their attendance rate was 98% for the Week! Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Student absences can be advised via:
1. QParents
2. Phoning the Absentee Line – 07 4975 8366
3. Send an email - absences@calliopess.eq.edu.au
4. Website - https://calliopess.eq.edu.au/
5. Phoning the Office – 07 49758333
6. Send a note to school with your child.
Parents and caregivers must send children to school every school day under Queensland law unless there is an acceptable reason such as:
- Illness
- Competing in school events.
If your child is going to be absent from school, you must let the school know why the absence has occurred within two school days of their return. If possible, it is best to advise the school beforehand.
Avoid keeping your child away from school for reasons such as:
- Birthdays
- Shopping
- Visiting family and friends
- If they sleep in
- Looking after other children
- Minor check ups or care, such as hair cuts.
Routine medical or other health appointments should be made either before or after school or during the school holidays.
Establishing good routines around school can assist with regular school attendance. These include:
- Have a set time to go to bed
- Have a set time to get out of bed
- Have uniform and school bag ready the night before
- Have a set time for starting and finishing breakfast
- Set a time for daily homework activities
- Speak about school positively
- Send your child to school every school day including their birthday and the last day of term.
If you are experiencing difficulty in sending your child to school, contact the school for advice and support.
PBL Weekly Lesson
The PBL lesson focus this week is ‘Respecting Other’s Belongings’. Last week, students were engaged in Calliope News where the students watched an example and a non-example of respecting other’s belongings. Across the school, students will be engaging in a brainstorm of belongings that are allowed and not allowed at school. Please remember students are not allowed to bring sports equipment or toys to school. They will then be brainstorming how to be respectful with other people’s belongings. If you would like a copy of the lesson that we do at school to reinforce at home, please email jxran4@eq.edu.au.
We realise that, on occasion, students may arrive late for school, or need to leave early; it is hoped that these occasions can be kept to a minimum so that the learning of the student, the class and the routine of the school is not unduly disrupted. In the event that your child is late or leaves early, please ensure that the correct procedure is followed to sign in/out by going to the Administration building and signing out on the iPad, collecting a slip and presenting it to the classroom teacher.
These processes are in place so that the teachers and school staff are aware of the movement of students at school. This is for the protection and welfare of all staff and students. It is important to look at the impact that late arrival and early departure have on a student/s education and those around them. It is not only disruptive to learning that is occurring in the classrooms at the time of arrival and departure, it is all time that accumulates to missed opportunities for learning. A student who is arriving late or leaving early by 15 minutes twice a week will miss, in total, the equivalent of 4 days of school across the year.
Hi everyone! As we hurtle towards the end of Semester One; there is plenty going on around our school!
We had a wonderful and productive P&C meeting last night. Some topics discussed include:
- Excursions coming up and how the P&C can financially assist with these, usually in the form of contributing to bus costs.
- Different fundraisers that are in the planning stages, including Pie Drive and Father’s Day Stall.
- We are trying to improve our ‘Containers for Change’ processes which includes some new bins for inside the school grounds. If families wish to take their donations directly to Containers for Change Calliope our Scheme ID is C10002245. Perhaps you only want to donate some of your stash? Every little bit helps us help the students!
- The Leadership team and the P&C collaborated on the Term 3 Events Calendar and had some laughs doing it!!
A big shout out goes to our school’s AMAZING Support Staff! These people include our cleaners, office staff, grounds keeper and school technician!! They all do such a wonderful job in their respective roles to support our teaching staff to provide a quality educational experience to our students! What a great team we have in Calliope!
If you have an Instrumental Music student; how wonderful it will be to see them perform at Calliope SHS in a collaborative showcase with the high schoolers tomorrow night!
Next Monday is Under 8’s morning! If you will be along with your Prep-2 student, Kindy friend and/or younger siblings; we will see you there! Keep an eye out for us; we will have a special guest with us too!!
Did you know this year the P&C created a Communications Officer role? The intention of this is to have a single entity across as many aspects of the school happenings as possible to enable accurate and consistent communication across the whole school community. This year we have Kristen Bailey in this role. Kristen is in her 10th and final year as a parent at Calliope SS. She has been volunteering in classrooms since 2014 and anyone who knows her knows she is passionate about communication! In this role, Kristen is responsible for attending meetings (PBL and P&C) and serving as a liaison to ensure consistencies in communication that is sent out to the school community. Kristen also assists the P&C executive team with the weekly newsletter submissions and Facebook updates. If you have any queries about dates, times, events or anything that is happening around our school, please don’t hesitate to send an email to the Communications Officer at communication.calliopess@gmail.com.
Warm regards,
Heidi, Geoff, Angela and Lisa.
We ask parents to assist us by checking their message bank before returning calls to the school, to establish which staff member has phoned. Due to the high volume of staff within our school it is not possible for us to identify who may have called you. Please call the member on their direct number if they have provided this as this will free up the office phone lines.
As you know, schools and classrooms are very busy places!
To ensure our students are fully engaged in their learning, and our office staff are able to complete their multitude of daily required tasks, we ask that parents communicate clearly with their child at the beginning of each day where you will be picking them up from in the afternoon.
As you can imagine it is extremely difficult for our office staff to field scores of phone calls asking for messages to be passed on to children regarding pick-up information.
Should you need to contact your children throughout the day, please do this via the office. These should be emergency situations only. Messages received after 1.45pm may not be acknowledged by the class in time, so please ensure children know their pick-up arrangements.
Last term your child brought home a letter regarding ICAS. ICAS is designed to target the higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills in English, Mathematics, Science, Writing, Spelling Bee and Digital Technologies of students in Year 2 to Year 6. Participation in any of the tests is completely optional.
These tests take place throughout Term 3 on the dates listed below. The cost of each test is also listed. We cannot offer catch up sessions for absent students on the scheduled sitting day. Please indicate which test/s you would like your child to take part in and pay for each test on the QKR APP or via EFTPOS at the Office. Please return this form and have made payment by Friday, 28 July 2023 Late payments and forms cannot be accepted.
Life Education will be available to all classes at the start of next term. Permission forms were sent home a few weeks ago with information for payment. All payment is due by this Thursday, 22 June, 3.30pm
SCHOOL HATS
Parents, can you please check your child's hat has their name on it and not someone elses. We have had many hats go missing and are trying to help families out by finding out their where abouts and returning them back to their rightful owner.
Thank you for your help in this matter.
The Port to Park is on again in 2023. It is a fun run that will be held on Sunday 20 August. Entries are open now! Participants can nominate their school to receive funds as part of the event.
Take in the magnificent views along the 10km Koongo Dash starting at East Shores and winding along Marina Parklands and Spinnaker Park or the 3km Yallarm Family Run, crossing the Marina Bridge and back to East Shores. For those with a competitive spirit or plenty of stamina, why not try both!
Keep updated at Gladstone Ports Corporation Facebook or visit Port to Park for more information.

Uniform Shop located at the entrance to the Multipurpose Hall (closes to the oval). Uniform can also be purchased through the QKR app.
Police would like to remind parents and caregivers that the areas marked in yellow below on the map are ‘No Stopping’ areas, which means that you can’t pull up and wait an extended period of time for a car to leave a car park or stop to drop your children off.
These areas are clearly signed and marked with a yellow line.
Also a reminder that the Stop, Drop and Go area is limited to 2 minutes for the loading and unloading of passengers. Police have and will continue to issue fines for vehicles stopped along the yellow lines and parked in the Stop, Drop and Go area for an extended period of time.
The maximum penalty for these offences is 20 penalty units (one penalty unit = $143.75) and can attract
3 demerit points.
To avoid the end of school traffic congestion, consider parking a bit further away and walking to collect your children or delaying pick up for 5 – 10 minutes.
Remember school staff will be at Stop, Drop and Go until 3:30pm.
