We had a fantastic week one at Calliope State School. As I visit classrooms, I am asking students two questions. What is the best thing about Calliope State School? If one thing could make this school better, what would it be? Students have given various answers but common answers across classes about the best thing about our school include friends, learning, teachers, sport, oval, maths, library, robotics, creativity, school camp, tuckshop and the list goes on. It is great to see students engaged and enthusiastic about their learning.
Annual Implementation Plan
In the next couple of weeks, we will finalise our Annual Implementation Plan. The annual implementation planning process enables the school team to collaborate and bring precision to the implementation of the priorities from the school's strategic plan. It identifies the explicit improvement agenda for a short, measurable period. Collaborative annual planning provides clarity, direction and focus for the school and fosters ongoing improvement.
Bell Times
This year our morning bell times have changed slightly. Our first bell goes at 8:35am which signals students to go to the oval and the second bell goes at 9:05am which signals students go to the toilet, have a drink and move to classrooms.
Dress Code
Calliope State School’s dress code is attached to this newsletter. Each week I will take a snippet from our dress code to highlight for our students. |

6 Amazing is dreaming of their future this year, their last year at Calliope State School. They have all made their own individual dream catcher to catch any negative influences that are holding them back from achieving their full potential. Planning holidays and persuading others to go to their holiday destination through their multi modal advertisements and conducting science experiments with solids, liquids and gases. We are learning about how federation and democracy shaped Australia, and how to use excel to map data. This is going to be a bonza year!

What is PBL?
PBL is an evidence based framework that focuses on positive relationships in order to increase student engagement and learning. Research has consistently
highlighted the relationship between effective classroom management; academic achievement; and teacher and student wellbeing.
PBL and Bullying Prevention
PBL is based on the belief that all students should have access to the supports needed to prevent the start and continued use of problem behaviours, including bullying. PBL focuses on the behaviour rather than the student, therefore, labels such as “bully” or “victim” are considered unhelpful, with the focus instead directed towards describing behaviour specifically and in relation to the setting in which it occurs (for example, “name calling in the playground before school”).
PBL takes a school-wide approach to bully prevention by teaching:
- What bullying looks like
- What to do before and when bullying behaviour is seen
- How to teach others what to do
- How to reduce the effectiveness of bullying through establishment of a positive school environment.
- Research shows that investing in the following proactive activities leads to improvements in positive school environments:
- A school-wide approach to teaching the social skills needed for success at school.
- An emphasis on teaching and learning within a positive school and classroom culture.
- Delivery of quality instruction to maximise academic success for all students.
- Monitoring of student learning and behaviour through continuous active supervision.
- High rates of positive acknowledgement for academic and social success.
- Engagement of all staff, students, parents and the wider community.
- Multi-year and multi-component approaches to implementation.
- Modelling of positive social behaviour and values by adults.
PBL Lesson of the Week:
This week students will be identifying and discussing the Zones of Regulation. Have a discussion with your child around the different emotions they feel when in the different zones. Your child will be identifying a place in the classroom they can go to regulate and then return to their learning. It is a chance for students to regulate and:
- not disrupt other students,
- miss out on limited learning,
- simplistically reengage in the learning when regulated.
Congratulations to 3A who had an amazing attendance rate for Week 1.
Their attendance rate was 100% for the Week!
Also, congratulations to the 14 classes which were at or above our school attendance target of 94% for Week 1.
Remember, every day you are away is a learning day lost.
Wide World of Sports with Mrs Betts
A huge congratulations to our Year 5 student Leah for being awarded, with her partner Hannah, the 2022 National acrobats of the year award from QLD Gymnastics. Leah received a silver and bronze medal at the Australian national championships and a gold and two bronzes at national clubs.
If your child is achieving big goals in their out of school sporting interests, we always love to share and have a brag about their successes. Please share with Mrs Betts at cbett49@eq.edu.au
Important information about Port Curtis sport:
The Port Curtis link to the Permission Details Booklet has changed. Please see below the correct link to access the PC paperwork. This link will take you to the Cap Sport website where there is the link for the paperwork.
Remember: If your child trials for a PC team, they must hand in a student permission details booklet on the day of the trial. Without this booklet, students will not be able to participate and will be ineligible for selection.
Mrs Betts (PE Teacher) and Ms Mackenzie (Principal) must sign this form before you take it to the trials. If needed you may email a completed student permission booklet to Mrs Betts (cbett49@eq.edu.au) at least three days before the trials and she will print the booklet and get it signed for you in time to take to the trials.
Next week, class teachers will be hosting their class information sessions for parents to find out about classroom expectations and routines, the year level curriculum and the year ahead for the students. This is always a wonderful opportunity to find out more about your child’s classroom and what they will be learning during the year. Meetings will be held in the classrooms.
