STATE EDUCATION WEEK
It’s State Education Week (24–30 October 2021)! This year’s theme, Strong communities, successful students, celebrates our positive state school communities. When we work together – teachers, parents, school staff and community members – we can achieve our common goal of the best outcomes for students.
WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
Our teachers are very special people. On World Teachers’ Day Friday 29 October we encourage the whole school community to say thank you in recognition of their dedication and important work. Every day they educate and inspire our students. Use #ThankQldTeachers to tag your thanks.
My contract has been extended and I will now be Acting Principal here at Calliope State School until April 1, 2022 (the end of Term 1). The substantive Principal, Moira McKenzie, has extended her leave and will return Term 2, 2022.
YEAR 6 CAMP
The final payment for Year 6 is due on Friday November 5. You are more than welcome to make small payments leading up to this date; however, all money due must be paid in full by 3pm on November 5.
SCHOOL OPINION DATA RESULTS
We have received our School Opinion Survey results. This week I have published our Student Survey results from our ‘Highlight’ report. This report shows the three most positive items and the three least positive items.
Out of a possible 176 students that could have responded to our School Opinion Survey, 119 students responded. That equates to 67% of students responding to the survey. As a school community we will work together to unpack this data over the coming months. We will do this in alignment with our current practices and processes and seek further feedback about next steps.
CSS INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Instrumental music recruiting is now under way for the 2022 school year.
Research has shown that learning a musical instrument can have a lasting positive effect on a child’s academic achievement, as well as their social and emotional wellbeing.
These instruments are available for the following students to learn:
- Strings (Violin, viola, cello, double bass) – Students currently in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 in 2021.
- Woodwind (flute, clarinet, saxophone), brass (trumpet, trombone, French horn, euphonium) and percussion – Students currently in Years 3, 4 and 5 in 2021.
Testing takes place in Week 4 this term, but it is not too late to pick up a form from the office. Return it as soon as possible in order to secure a spot for next year.
There are some instruments available for beginners to rent, however these are limited in number and it is essential to get in early in order to secure one.
This is a fantastic low-cost opportunity to make a lasting impact on your child’s life. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zm0xREePFtw
CALLIOPE CHRISTMAS CAROLS 2021 – DATE CLAIMER
The Calliope Carols are back on this year, after a break due to COVID restrictions. They will be held on Friday November 26 (Week 8). As in previous years, each year level is learning a song, which they will perform on stage as part of the concert.
It has been noted that the date also coincides with the return of the Year 6 students from their camp. We understand that this will be the end of a big week for these students but we hope that as many as possible will still attend the carols event and perform, as this will be their last carols event before they go to high school.
We hope to see everyone there!
WEAR RED FOR DAY FOR DANIEL
Our school community is taking part in Day for Daniel on Friday 29 October 2021. It’s an important day to educate children on their personal safety online and in physical environments. Don’t forget to wear red on 29 October. Visit the Daniel Morcombe website for free resources to empower children to “Recognise, React, Report” if they ever feel unsafe.
BE KIND ONLINE – PREVENTING CYBERBULLYING FOR QUEENSLAND STATE SCHOOLS
The department has launched animations to encourage students to block content, report it, and support each other if they see or experience bullying online. The animations show common scenarios that occur, and remind students to Be kind online. Primary students can find out how bullying in gaming and sharing mean content can impact others and what actions they can take. Secondary students can explore the impact of sharing intimate photos and negative anonymous accounts. It is important students know they are not alone and there are ways to prevent cyberbullying. Share the videos with your children and start the conversation today.

This term we are learning about advertising. Particularly, we are looking at the different language features that different companies use to grab their target audiences' attention and how they make them want to buy their products. We have been working in groups to allow for peer support as well as listening to a variety of our peers ideas.

Disco – THIS THURSDAY the 28th of October- Halloween Themed
Come dressed in your favourite Halloween costume to dance the night away with friends. Please ensure the costumes are practical for dancing in the hall safely and please, no masks. This is a friendly event for all students so no face masks will be permitted, sorry. Hot food, snacks and drinks will be available on the night.
Prep – Year 2: 5:30pm – 6:45pm
Year 3 – Year 6: 7pm – 8:30pm
If any parents are planning to hang around for the duration of the disco, we would love some help on the night. Some jobs on the night include:

- Packing and cleaning up
There will he section inside the hall where parents can wait for the disco to conclude. Unfortunately we can’t have sibling inside the disco area for safety reasons. Thank you very much for your understanding around this. Please contact us on Facebook or via the email address below if you can help for the evening.
SUNNIES FOR CCS DAY
Our school P&C and Calliope Kindergarten ran this fundraiser last term to help a charity who provides accommodation, facilities and transport to regional families who have a child undergoing Cancer treatment. Their name is Childhood Cancer Support. On Monday, we had the pleasure of presenting our donation to CCS. Between the school and kindy, we raised an impressive $1200 and it was such an honour to support a charity who are helping a Calliope family. Thank you to everyone within the community who supported this day. We are so proud of you.

Next General Meeting: Tuesday November 9th at 6pm in the Conference Room. Please come to a meeting as we round up this year and prepare, plan and budget for 2022. We are always eager to see some new faces and hear new ideas for the direction of our P&C.
With half of our Executive team currently living outside of Calliope and others having work, family and life commitments, we need all hands on deck to run meetings and organise events. Please contact us if you can lend a hand.
2022 is shaping up to be an exciting year with big events under development already. We are going to require more members to smash our goals. Please consider becoming a member in 2022. No, you don’t need to attend every meeting or help at every event. You will be a voice for your kids though, which is very important to help support their lives at school.

Hi Guys!
This week we will be treating the staff who have worked so hard this year to educate and support our kids to a Delicious Brunch. Some of our mums have offered to make homemade biscuits, slices, lasagne, chicken carbonara and Mexican. If you would like to contribute please email me at sjarm17@eq.edu.au to let me know what you would like to donate (gifts or food) and please bring it into the office before 10.30am on the following dates. Thank you for your consideration.
- 29th October Friday – 11am – 11.45am
- 26th November Friday – 11am – 11.45am
The new Brave Box initiative is located in my office and helps kids to prevent mental health issues by teaching them to think about what they are thinking about. Instead of storing all of those thoughts in their mind (which can weigh us down) we are encouraging kids to write them down and put them in the BRAVE Box. This helps kids to begin to recognise their own thoughts and what could be getting in the way of concentrating on their education.
What is a Chappy and what does a Chappy do?
Recently people have been asking what do you do? I wanted to clarify a little bit about how I can help you and your kids. Even though I am called a Chaplain my role is to do support work. This means I am able to support your family emotionally, physically or spiritually. The kind of things your kids could do is talk to me about life and play games at the same time. I do not provide a counselling service but sometimes spending time with kids and listening to them really helps to support them emotionally. I will be here on Monday’s, Tuesdays and Fridays this term if you would like me to support your family please contact me via email sjarm17@eq.edu.au.
This week we are starting a program called Seasons for Growth. Over the next 6 weeks students will come together and share their experiences of change and loss. Students will learn that they are not alone in their experiences and are able to build communication, resilience, decision making and problem-solving skills within the context of a safe and supportive peer group learning environment. The program runs for 8 sessions during school time and is about 30-45 minutes a session. We look forward to the positive changes that this program will bring our students.
Have a great week!!
