School Improvement
“Every student succeeding is the shared vision of Queensland state schools. This strategy underpins regional and school planning to ensure every student receives the support needed to belong to the school community, engage purposefully in learning and experience academic success.”
This is the strategic vision provided by the Department. Here at Calliope State School, we are always working towards strategies that bring this to life. The school mantra of “Together for Student Learning” guides our decision making processes and our policies. We regularly share information around these at our P&C meeting. If you would like to know more, please feel free to join our P&C meetings. Another great way to be involved in our school is to join our Positive Behaviour for Learning committee who meet each month on a Wednesday afternoon. If you are interested in doing so, please contact the office for further information.
This year we will continue our focus area of “Reading Improvement”. We are relentless in our use of data to inform the next steps for our learners. This week our teachers will all begin meeting with members of the leadership team to work together to identify these next steps.
Learning to read should be a fun time at home. Below are some ideas for our early readers.
Parent Volunteers
Thank you to all the parents, grandparents and carers who were able to attend one of the recent Volunteer Mandatory training sessions. The teachers are excited to start having volunteers in the classrooms soon. We will run another session in the coming weeks, so if you are interested, please let us know your preferred day.
Feedback Welcome
Calliope State School is committed to ensuring that ‘everyone at Calliope State School is working together to ensure that every day, in every classroom, every student is learning and achieving’. We want to know from our parents, carers and students, what we are doing well, and if there are any areas we can improve on or do differently. You can give feedback at any time to a staff member, coming into the school office, or leaving a message in our Suggestion Box (in the office foyer). Please be respectful when providing feedback.
If you have a complaint we ask that you:
1) Arrange a time to speak with the class teacher as the first point of call.
2) If your concern is regarding the classroom teacher or a staff member, contact the office to speak with a Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s sector.
We ask that you refrain from using social media platforms to comment about issues or incidents involving our school. We have a great school with great students and staff and together we can continue to promote our school as a fantastic learning venue in our community.
We have started off the year with a bang, lots of learning and loads of laughs. The poetry unit for English is proving to be an exciting one with the students writing lovely little poems using rhyme and repetition. We have enjoyed all the spoils of the wonderful literature that is available these days that is written in verse, in particular, Pig the Pug and The Very Cranky Bear series.
Our Science unit is starting to get exciting, deciphering the properties of materials with experiments that look at natural and man-made products and investigating if things are waterproof or absorbent, strong or weak and why we use materials for different things. The kids were shocked to learn about silk worms and where the silk actually comes from. They were equally as amazed about glass making and how people make it from silica and sand. We do live in a material world.
I am so excited for the wonderful things this year will bring. Be sure to ask where silk comes from.
Welcome to the new segment in the newsletter each week, we will ask the hard questions of the students of Calliope State School.
This week’s question: What makes Calliope SS so great?
6B feels it is a resounding US, the students make Calliope State School great. The students attitude, respect for the school rules, and our acceptance and inclusion of everyone. We also have an awesome group of teachers! Add to this the sports that are on offer such Rugby League, Netball, Soccer, Volleyball and Cricket. Plus our cultural activities such as Choir, Instrumental Music (strings, band and orchestra). We also have an amazing Robotics program.
From the lower primary, they feel that the pool is amazing to swim in, our library has great games and the playgrounds are fun. WE learn about how to interact at the Hub. The grounds are beautiful with many gardens, and of course the teachers are the best!
So there you have it, Calliope State School is the greatest.
Student Wellbeing Team news.....
Supporting your child’s wellbeing and learning
When children have a strong sense of wellbeing, they experience greater success in learning. Our school is strongly committed to enhancing the wellbeing of our students which is why we have a range of activities and supports across our school that help students feel and function the best they can. This is part of a Queensland-wide recognition of the importance of wellbeing and is supported by a series of webisodes delivered by respected psychologist Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. The short video presentations are available at: http://deta.qld.gov.au/initiatives/learningandwellbeing/resources.html
Wellbeing is a state in which every individual realises his or her potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. World Health Organisation, 2018

Get in Quick, Your chance to be in the
Regional CQ Newspaper!
My name is Duncan, I’m a journalist with CQ Today.
We’re a regional newspaper based in Rockhampton and we cover the entire Central Queensland region.
Over the next couple of months, we hope to run a special section featuring short stories from local CQ children, between the ages of 8 and 12.
We have no set word count and would be delighted to publish anything dreamed up by your students.
Each week, we will print the stories in the paper and then towards the end of term, announce what we believe to be some of the finest stories submitted and offer prizes to the children.
We think it would be a wonderful way to encourage narrative writing and creative thinking in our local students.
Do you think any of your students might be interested in submitted stories for publication?
If so, please let me know and I would be delighted to arrange publication.
I hope this finds you well,
Yours sincerely,
Duncan
