AIP
The second strategy in in our AIP is Curriculum – Build staff capability in V9 AC English to deliver high quality curriculum with a focus on reading.
There are seven actions to achieve this strategy. They are
- Implement structures for all Phases of Moderation for V9 English, including collaborative curriculum planning and reflection, using collaborative data-informed analysis, and develop, explore, unpack and formalise student friendly marking guides and Know and Do Charts.
- Use reading Implementation Guide and Signposts (P-2 and 3-6) to Monitor and progress Calliope SS journey in the teaching of reading.
- Refine the Whole School Approach to Differentiated Teaching and Learning with a focus on Reading.
- Build knowledge of leadership team and key classroom teachers in the teaching of reading.
- Formalise documented processes for teachers and leaders to collaboratively plan and review curriculum to ensure planning time is purposeful, efficient and effective.
- Broaden teachers’ capability across in English to ensure contextualised unit plans and assessment tasks are aligned with AC Ver 9.
- Use devices to ensure access to quality resources and to allow student demonstration of learning.
Last week some students came to my office to show me some of their amazing work.
4B have been learning about the life and hardships that the children convicts aboard the first fleet faced, the youngest of whom was reported to be just 13 years old. The students have looked at their lives before and after the voyage and what life in general was like for children in the 1700's. We have learned they were expected to work dangerous jobs for very little pay and a favourite food of the time was a hot potato.
They have researched the three ships that the child convicts sailed on and have hand drawn a great replica of the actual ships. 4B are having a great term of learning and strive to succeed every day. Below are three student’s drawings from 4B.

Regional Director Visit
Yesterday our Regional Director, Kay Kirkman visited Calliope State School. Kay wanted to know about the positives that are happening in our school. She met with Student Leaders and Smiley. They shared the following aspects of our school with her
- The Resilience Project; students shared how our school’s focus on The Resilience Project is having a positive impact on our whole school community through a focus on GEM – Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness. Students also spoke about their legacy project of creating a GEM garden, a place where any student can go to practise GEM.
- Our Kagan Structures and ensuring that everyone is engaged at our school through class building, team building, structures and cheers. These are used in the classroom and on assembly.
- Our Nude Food program occurs on Mondays where students bring lunch boxes with no wrappers. They discussed how every student who brings a nude food lunch box gets a raffle ticket that goes into a draw for Friday assembly, for a chance to win a nude food lunch box product. Students also shared our new popper bin recycling project that is being led by our Year Three students.
- The revitalisation of our school mascot, Smiley, through our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) team and the impact Smiley has on reminding students to be Safe, Respectful and Responsible in our school.
- Our Mystery Person segment on assembly where a mystery person each week is on the look out for the best class on assembly. The mystery person announces this at the end of assembly and that class get to sit in the VIP seats the following week.
- Exciting technology in our school – Promethean boards, ipads and laptops.
- Staff attending QLearn workshops in Brisbane to enhance their learning
- The amazing staff at Calliope State School
- School camps, sporting activities, sports days, sport gala days (softball coming up), student council.
Bikes and Scooters
A reminder to our whole school community that bikes and scooters are to be walked out of the school grounds and on the foot paths in front of the school. We have over 500 students in our school and it is busy at arrival and departure times. This is for the safety of everyone. Each week students and adults are getting hurt where these rules are not being followed. Please consider others by observing this rule for safety of our whole school community.
