Welcome to Week Four of Term Two. This Friday is Walk Safely to School Day. Until they’re ten, children must always hold an adult’s hand when crossing the road. More details can be found further down in our newsletter.
The first strategy in in our AIP is Data – Use school and student performance data to inform teaching and student learning. There are three actions to achieve this strategy. They are:
- Develop and implement data analysis and evaluation systems, linked to the three phases of moderation, to improve teaching practice, through specific, informed data knowledge and the impact on student learning outcomes.
- Develop teachers’ data literacy skills to enable them to purposefully engage with data to inform teaching practices and improve student engagement.
- Clarify processes for using data when developing strategies to improve student outcomes for priority groups, to foster understanding by all staff.
Recently our staff have participated in moderation at school where each classroom teacher brings a sample of student assessment and the cohort discusses the achievement of the assessment piece. In English all teachers know the acievement of every student from Semester Two of 2024. They develop targets and predictions. Next steps to support students to continue to achieve at that level or move up to the next level are considered.
This week, teachers will participate in across schools moderation where they will share assessment work samples with other teachers across other schools in Gladstone. This ensures consistency in marking across our schools.
Mystery Person – each week on assembly we have a mystery person who watches the classes across the whole assembly and then announces at the end who the class is that have displayed the best actions on assembly through entering quietly, sitting and listening and following all assembly processes. We are looking for any parents who regularly attend who may want to be our “Mystery Person”. Please let our office know if you are interested.
Bikes and Scooters
A reminder to our whole school community that bikes and scooters are to be walked out of the school grounds and on the foot paths in front of the school. We have over 500 students in our school and it is busy at arrival and departure times. This is for the safety of everyone. Each week students and adults are getting hurt where these rules are not being followed. Please consider others by observing this rule for safety of our whole school community.
Walk Safely to School Day
This Friday, 16 May, is Walk Safely to School Day. We will be walking to school with families again this year. Students and families are asked to meet staff at the top of the hill near the Bowls Club – opposite Drakes at 8.30am to walk to school together.
RotaKids Update
Thank you to all the families who supported our ‘Wear Purple’ day on Monday. We will be donating $207 to our local Domestic and Family Violence community group.

A Nude Food lunchbox is one that eliminates disposable wrappers and single-use packaging, such as plastic, foil, or zip-lock bags. Instead, it focuses on packaging-free foods, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional packed lunches.
Why is it important?
The idea behind Nude Food has two primary goals:
- Encourage children to consume more whole, real foods while reducing reliance on processed snacks and packaged items.
- Reduce single-use packaging and minimize litter around schools.
Studies reveal that, on average, a single packed lunch generates three pieces of litter, contributing to a total of 30kg of waste per child every year. At Calliope State School, this translates to a staggering 16.8 metric tons of avoidable waste annually!
Introducing “Nude Food Mondays”
Calliope State School is proud to launch "Nude Food Mondays," an initiative to inspire students to bring rubbish-free lunches, free from plastic bags, paper bags, wrappings, or cling wrap. Not only does this promote sustainability, but it also encourages students to pack meals that nourish their bodies and support healthy brain function.
To motivate participation, every Monday we’ll hold a raffle! Teachers will give out raffle tickets to students who bring a "Nude Lunch," and these students will be entered to win a Nude Food Lunchbox Pack.
Top Tips for Packing Nude Food Lunchboxes:
- Find a Nude Food approach that suits your family’s routine.
- Keep things fresh and exciting with a variety of colourful foods.
- Start small! Replace one single-use item in your child’s lunchbox with a Nude Food alternative. Include foods you know they love, while gradually introducing new ones to try.
- Shop for foods with minimal packaging—fruit and vegetables are an excellent place to start. Seasonal produce often tastes better and is more affordable.
- Nude Food doesn’t require expensive lunchboxes or perfectly curated meals—simple and sustainable is the key.
