Return to School
Next week we look forward to welcoming back our Prep and Year 1 students. Children of essential workers and vulnerable children will continue to be able to attend school for supervision. For students in Years 2 – 10, the current home-based learning arrangements will remain in place. If low COVID-19 transmission rates continue, students in Years 2 – 10 will be able to return to school from Monday 25 May, 2020. Confirmation of this step will be made by 15 May 2020.
We ask parents and carers to pay particular attention to the requirement for adults to maintain physical distancing of 1.5m at all times around the school. Please make use of our stop, drop and go area wherever possible.
Access to the physical school grounds will be for students and staff only. No parents/visitors are to enter the school grounds without approval. Please be sure to read our signage.
Detailed information on drop off and pick up arrangements will be shared in the coming days.
Please note that should you need to come the office - the door will be closed and you are asked to use the designated window to speak with staff.
It is essential that you keep your child home from school if they are unwell. In accordance with Queensland Health Directions parents or carers of any child showing signs of illness will be asked to collect them immediately from the school.
Thanks to our Guidance Officers
27th April -8th May is a time to say thank you to our Guidance Officers and for celebrating their ever smiling and never-ending contribution to the wellbeing of students, parents/carers and staff at Calliope State School. We are very lucky to have two amazing Guidance Officers, Karen Mooney and Cherie Hughes. Together, they support the staff and students in a variety of ways.
Reporting
In line with the modified schooling for this term, we share the following information about assessment and reporting. Be assured that students will only be assessed on units of work that they have been taught and completed at school.
This semester students will be assessed on the following subject areas:
- English
- Maths
- Science
- Health and Physical Education
- Music
Students in Years 1-6 will receive a level of achievement grade and commentary to match what they have learnt in the semester and a future focus. Prep students will only receive commentary on their learning.
No behaviour or effort marks will be included.
Teachers will be using results from Term 1 and short units of study in the above subject areas when students return to school.
Reports will be sent home, in early Term 3 via email, with parent-teacher interviews offered after these.

Thank You
Our sincere thanks continues to go out to our families and staff during these different times. It is positive to hear how students (and parents) have adapted and the exciting learning, which is taking place at home.
Please remember if you need any assistance to contact your child’s class teacher.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Welcome to Week 3. It appears the end is in sight; however, teaching of behaviour is ongoing and this week in PBL we are looking at: Responsible – Transitions. When we move about the school, there are a number of things to consider to help us promote positive behaviour. These include:
- Walking on the left-hand side of the walkways;
- Always walking on the concrete;
- Maintaining an arms distance between the person in front and behind; and,
- Remaining on the designated footpaths over the grass areas.
Please take a moment to revise this with your child/ren.
Also, Calliope News has three special presenters today – well, Mr Green and Mr Rowe and one special presenter really. You Can Do It is brought to us this week by an intrepid reporter who has appeared on Calliope News previously. I won’t give it away, but he has four legs, a tail and works for snacks. You can see him on Facebook to figure out who it is.
Have a good week.
Brian Rowe
Student Welfare Teacher.
