Last night our P&C held their Annual General Meeting. The outgoing executive committee have put many years of personal time into our school and we thank them for all the work they have done in assisting to make Calliope the school it is, through their support and fundraising efforts. A huge thank you goes to our outgoing 2022/23 executives.
President: Tenielle Wode
Secretary: Kate Whitehead
Treasurer: Geoff Kerr and Bec Harlow
Congratulations to our incoming executives for 2023.
President – Heidi Jackman
Vice President – Geoff Kerr
Secretary – Lisa Newby
Treasurer - Angela Kummerfeld
Guidance Officers
We welcome Katelyn Blake and Lucy Hodgkinson to our school. Katelyn is our new Guidance Officer and will be with us until the end of the year at this stage. Lucy is our Engagement & Student Wellbeing Guidance Officer as part of the Student Wellbeing Package. Lucy will be working at our school every Wednesday and Thursday.
Annual Implementation Plan (AIP)
Our Priority for 2023 is “Calliope State School embraces Equity and Excellence for All”. We have three strategies to achieve this. Our second strategy is Curriculum Implementation. Our second action is Embed the Australian Curriculum General Capabilities and Cross-Curriculum Priorities through the implementation of the CSS Whole School Approach to Moderation. All teaching staff participated in in-school moderation this week. Some of our staff will be attending between schools moderation this Friday.
Student Code of Conduct
Each week I will focus on an aspect of Calliope’s Student Code of Conduct. This week the focus is on expectations for parents and the standards we commit to as staff.

Valuable Items/Money/Toys
Another friendly reminder to all families that toys and personal items and valuables need to remain at home. Already in the last couple of days I have seen toy cars brought to school by students. Children love to share. When items are given away and then there is a change of mind, this often causes escalation and valuable teaching time to sort out incidents is lost. Please assist by not allowing personal items to be brought to school unless it is a designated celebration day.
Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey
In the next couple of weeks our students from year 4 - 6 will participate in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey. The Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey aims to collect information from Queensland state schools in a consistent and systematic way to gain a better understanding of the engagement and wellbeing of our students. It asks questions about many aspects of students' wellbeing, engagement and experience at school. Data from the survey will help schools monitor their school culture, school engagement and student wellbeing in line with the Student Learning and Wellbeing Framework and our Department’s Equity and Excellence: realising the potential of every student vision.
Calliope State School Parent/Caregiver Survey
Next week parents/caregivers will be emailed a survey that is designed by our school. This survey will consist of two parts. The first part has questions that are included in the Department’s School Opinion Survey, in addition to some other questions. Your response to this will give us some data on how we are progressing with our priorities from Term 1. There will enable us to adjust our strategies can continue to improve.
The second part of the survey includes consultation on the nature of Calliope State School’s swimming program and activities and to assist in deciding whether the programs will be facilitated by school-based staff or an external provider.
The survey will open on Wednesday 26 April and close Wednesday 3 May.
Upcoming Events Calendar
This newsletter will include our upcoming Events Calendar that can be printed and put on the fridge. This week’s newsletter will only have this month, but as events are finalised the whole term will be included in the calendar. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstances changes occur. We aim to keep these to a minimum. A great example is the weather. If an event needs to change we will notify you via Facebook. We now have our SMS system ready for extreme circumstances. In these instances you will receive a text. Please ensure your details are correct on our system and that we have your current mobile phone number so you can receive these texts when required.
PBL Focus
This week students are focusing on a new lunch tub routine. They will look at putting the lunch tubs into a ‘lunch tub lock up’ to;
- Prevent the loss of food in our lunch boxes,
- Avoid lunch boxes being hazards in eating areas, and
- Give more room to play in the eating areas.
With any new routine there are teething issues and we have already altered some places that the lunch tub lock up is located to support students. If you would like a copy of the Lunch Tub Routine PowerPoint that the students will be engaging in to reinforce at home, please email jxran4@eq.edu.au.
Whole School Celebration
Last term, we had a fantastic time at the Whole School Celebration. Thank you for all those parents organised with their student’s names and classes on them. It made it a lot easier for sorting in the morning.
Tiered Major Behaviour Data
The triangle graph has been used to indicate the percentage of students at Calliope State School who have repeated major incidents. These are categorised into Tier, 1, 2 and 3 – as previously explained in the newsletter. We are currently sitting at 92.7% of students in Tier 1. Our target is to have this percentage above 90% each semester.
Below I have represented the data in whole numbers to show that 92.7% of students is a lot of students – 518 students to be exact.
PBL Meetings for Term 2
We love having parent involvement in our PBL meetings. This is where we make decisions according to our Tier 1 supports – which is all students. If you have any questions or concerns, please mention this when we discuss ‘hot topics’. Last meeting we had a few items we needed to share and get through but next meeting will have less items and more time for hot topics. We can’t wait to see you there.
Term 2 meeting dates:
- Wednesday 3rd of May - 3.30pm
- Wednesday 24th of May - 3.30pm
- Wednesday 14th of June - 3.30pm
National Gymnastic Competition
Huge Congratulations to one of our talented students, Leah in Year 5. Leah and her partner did very well in their National Gymnastic competition over the Easter holidays. They gained selection in the Queensland Team. Leah and her partners competed in the Level 6 Women's Trio, for Acro, and received the highest 2 scores of the competition.
Nationals will be on the Gold Coast in May.
On behalf of Calliope State School, we wish you all the best in May.

Farewell from us!
Message from Bec (Bookkeeper/Treasurer): I would like to thank our amazing executive team who have worked tirelessly throughout the last year. After 5 years as an executive member, I would like to thank the admin team for their help and support over the years, the exec team that really hasn’t changed in that time and especially to Tenielle who roped me in before Harrison had even finished kindy. I have loved (almost) every minute of my time in the exec team and will definitely have trouble letting go – P&C has been my baby for over 5 years. Good luck to the incoming executive team, you do have big shoes to fill but I’m sure it will continue to be the success that it’s been built up to.
Message from Kate: Having been on the exec committee for the last 4 yrs, it has been a wonderful way to be part of the school community. I can't thank Teneille and Bec enough for their support and encouragement. While endings are sad, there are new beginnings also and I'm really excited to see where the new exec team take the P&C.
All good things must come to an end, at last nights AGM I was chair for the last meeting as an executive... for 5 years P&C has been my second job, my escape and my way of being involved in a school that I love. With many ups and downs, mostly ups, I have seen the school change and grow and am very proud to stand with the admin team as these changes occur. As a parent I always looked at P&C like American PTA, totally not like that. I have been part of a team of amazing executives, some who I now call family, an admin team who has backed us 100% and volunteers who can never be replaced. I am proud to step back and look at what we have achieved and what we have done for our kids and our school as a whole. A special mention to Bec, from 7 hours away, has dealt with me for 5 years, Kate who stepped up when we needed her and Geoff for being brave enough to be on a Committee with 3 ladies.
On that note I would like to welcome and introduce the new executive committee for 2023:
President: Heidi Jackman
Vice President: Geoff Kerr
Secretary: Lisa Newby
Treasurer: Angela Kummerfeld
We wish you all the best and we are always only a message away.
To our parents students and staff please catch up, stop us and say hi. We are always still floating around.
Signing off for the last time.
Tenielle, Bec & Kate
