Principal's Piece

WELCOME TO TERM 4 -

While Ms. Ditchman is currently on other duties I have been fortunate to be asked to serve as Principal during this time. Today is my first day and I would like to share my first impressions of Calliope State School. The first thing I noticed was how early many of the staff arrive at work. The school had an energy about it, hours before the day officially started, and the positive nature of the interactions between staff was evident. This is certainly the case with the leadership team who have made me feel very welcome. The clear systems and efficient processes that are in place here are excellent and again point toward a dedicated and skillful team. My first priority has been to visit each classroom to introduce myself to the students. I would like to commend the students for the way they were welcoming,  respectful and for their level of engagement in their studies which was excellent. They wear their uniform with pride which is also pleasing to see. The facilities at our school are up with the best, with some excellent modern teaching spaces along with well maintained older buildings.  Calliope State School is an impressive place and I commend all the staff, students, parents and carers for the part they play in making this happen.
Term 4 is marked by some important preparation for transitions that will occur in 2023 . Prep to Year 1, Year 5 to Senior and Year 6 to high school are all important milestones. We provide support and guidance for these transitions to make them a celebration of progression through school. These will be a focus in these classes and parents can support this through conversations with their children.

Every Day Counts -

A student with an attendance rate of 85% will miss the equivalent to one whole year of school over seven years of primary school. It is important that students are at school every day and only remain at home if they are sick. Continued poor attendance is treated very seriously and can result in parents being fined or taken to court.  If you are experiencing significant issues getting your child to attend school, please contact us so we can work together towards a solution.

Term 4 Swimming -

Swimming is an important part of the Calliope SS curriculum and the culture of the school. This year the format has needed to be changed as a result of staffing pressures . I would like to refer you to the letter sent to all parents last term that you can access through this link: https://calliopess.schoolzineplus.com/edm/campaign/view/email/164/6318322b59865
There has been some inaccurate information circulating in the community and I ask that you familiarise yourself with the reasons for the change. There is no doubt a swimming program is worthwhile but it cannot be at the expense of student support in classrooms to achieve the literacy and numeracy skills that are so critical to being a happy and productive member of the community. The new program balances these two interests and has been the work of many caring and dedicated staff and parents.

P&C

The P&C are the people who help make a good school great. The Calliope SS P&C are an active and dedicated group that are always keen to welcome new members. If you have the opportunity to give back to the community we encourage you to be part of our P&C who meet every second Tuesday of the month. Would be lovely to see you next Tuesday 11 October 2022

New Staff Member -

Megan Gahan A warm welcome to Megan who joins our teaching staff this term and will be teaching Year 1. We hope you have a wonderful time at our school.

Roadways Behaviour Monitoring System -

In a world-first road safety initiative, new speed camera technology will soon target speeding drivers at selected school zones across Queensland. Everyone has a role in keeping our roads safe. It is imperative drivers reduce their speed to the signed 40 km/h speed limit and be aware of activity by students on or near the road. Speed cameras will only operate during school zone times at the selected schools. Parents, and carers dropping off or picking up students are urged to comply with school zone speed limits. Those who slow down will not be penalised.
