Mental Health First Aid- FREE upcoming workshops

As part of Gladstone Regional Council’s Strong Steps to Improved Mental Wellbeing, I wanted to share with you some FREE upcoming workshops being hosted across the region  (posters are attached for courses until end July).

Registrations are essential and can be made online here: https://conversations.gladstone.qld.gov.au/strong-steps-improved-mental-wellbeing or follow the QR code on the posters. You can also view several other opportunities on offer across the region throughout the year! Various courses will be hosted in Gladstone, Boyne/ Tannum, Calliope, Boyne Valley, Mt Larcom, Miriam Vale, Agnes Water and Baffle Creek.

Age restrictions apply to the various courses on offer and catering will be provided. A description of the courses is below:

Mental Health First Aid:  A 2-day courses are designed to teach members of the community how to notice the signs of poor mental health in their friends, family members and colleagues. Mental health first aid is provided to someone who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem or is in a mental health crisis. It teaches the skills around how to have a conversation with the person in a way that will guide them towards the help they need, and the first aid is given until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves.

SafeTALK: a half-day alertness workshop that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST.

ASIST: In ASIST, people learn to apply a suicide intervention model. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of suicide. It helps caregivers recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide. It then explores how to connect with them in ways that understand and clarify that risk, increase their immediate safety and link them with further help.
