STEM CLUSTER COMPETITION

A number of our students attended the STEM Cluster competition on Friday. The students had a great day and learned a lot about STEM, expanding their knowledge greatly. I would like to extend a thank you to Mrs Mastromonaco and Ms Crookey for the time and effort they put into preparing the students for this event, giving up their own time to ensure the students are prepared for the competition.

Five teams competed and all represented Calliope State School very well. Cargo Honk, Super Sonics and Warriors 2.3 were very successful in autonomously collecting and sorting materials into their base, wowing the judges with their designs. Two teams succeeded to do this and more, with The Bulls taking out the Encouragement Award and the Vipers taking out the most prestigious award for the event, the Grit Resilience and Co-operation award. Many great comments were made about our school’s uniform, motivation and high success.

WEAR PURPLE FOR DOMESTIC AND FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION MONTH – MAY 30

On Monday May 30, all staff and students are invited to wear purple, the colour that is associated in raising awareness of domestic and family violence.

Each May, Queensland marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month (DFVP Month) to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence and to send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families and homes will not be tolerated.

DAY FOR DANIEL – JUNE 1

On Wednesday June 1, we encourage our students to wear red, the colour that represents child safety, and donate a gold coin, as we acknowledge ‘Day for Daniel’. We are acknowledging this day early this year as we are lucky enough to have the Morcombe’s visit our school on this day. The Morcombe’s will provide personal child safety education to all of our students.

SCHOOL GROUNDS

It has been noted that there are a number of parents/carers driving through the school gates, towards Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) at the Hall, quite quickly and not taking into consideration that there are staff and students walking around in this area anywhere from dawn to dusk. Please limit your speed to no more than 5km/h through this area. This area is also not to be accessed from 7.30am onwards for OSHC parking. If you arrive any time after 7.30am, you are to park in the community parking, outside of the school grounds.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

We will be celebrating National Reconciliation Week (NRW) at Calliope State School with our school community on Monday May 30 at 3.30pm. More details will be provided to invited participants in the coming week.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. NRW, which is held from 27 May to 3 June, provides an opportunity for all of us to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme is: “Be Brave. Make Change”, which presents a challenge to all Australians to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for the benefit of all Australians. The dates for NRW commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. For more information and some great resources, head to the NRW website.
