NAPLAN

Year 3 and 5 students completed NAPLAN online last week. Our students have engage in the online assessment tasks in a responsible manner, doing an excellent job of following the processes involved. I'd like to acknowledge the work of our teachers in preparing the students for NAPLAN Online, Ms Norris and Mrs Crapp for organising the processes to implement the tests and to Mr Mattingley, our IT specialist, for ensuring the technology ran smoothly for students to participate. Student results will be released later in the year, and will be sent home to parents.

DAY FOR DOLLY – LAST FRIDAY

On Friday May 13 we acknowledged ‘Do It for Dolly Day’. There was a sea of students wearing either an Akubra, fedora or slouch hat and/or wearing a blue coloured shirts or Dolly merchandise. All students were given the opportunity to colour in ‘Dolly’s Dream’ butterflies that now line the Administration building walls, acting as a reminder that support is available. The teachers in individual classrooms led discussions with students focusing on kindness, compassion and understanding.

DAY FOR DANIEL – JUNE 1

On Wednesday June 1, we encourage our students to wear red, the colour that represents child safety, and donate a gold coin, as we acknowledge ‘Day for Daniel’. We are acknowledging this day early this year as we are lucky enough to have the Morcombe’s visit our school on this day. The Morcombe’s will provide personal child safety education to all of our students on how to stay safe from abuse and risk of harm.

WALK SAFELY TO SCHOOL DAY – MAY 20

On Walk Safely to School Day, we will be encouraging the students to walk with their parents or caregiver to school. The Calliope State School Leadership Team will also be walking to school with students on the morning of May 20.

There will be two starting points. We will start walking from the below points at 8.30am:

  1. Top of hill near Bowls Club  - walk down the hill
  2. Bunting Park – walk to school

Walk Safely to School Day encourages healthy habits as well as teaching vital road safety skills.

Primary school aged children across Australia will make those important steps towards a healthier future by participating in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 20 May 2022. National Walk Safely to School Day is a community initiative that aims to raise awareness of the health, road safety, transport and environmental benefits that regular walking (especially to and from school) can provide for the long term well-being of our children.

Now in its 23rd year, the annual event has joined forces with National Road Safety Week (15 – 22 May) to further draw the spotlight on road safety and support the importance of regular walking, not just on 20 May, but every day.

P&C APPRECIATION DAY

This Friday 20 May, we recognise and acknowledge our wonderful P&C at Calliope State School. Our P&C work tirelessly in many ways, supporting students, parents and staff at the school. They fundraise, run the tuckshop and Uniform Shop to name a few.

Thank you to our 2022 executive and dedicated team for all your work!

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

We will be celebrating National Reconciliation Week (NRW) at Calliope State School with our school community on Monday May 30 at 3.15pm. More details will be provided to invited participants in the coming week.

National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. NRW, which is held from 27 May to 3 June, provides an opportunity for all of us to explore how we can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. This year’s theme is: “Be Brave. Make Change”, which presents a challenge to all Australians to tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation for the benefit of all Australians. The dates for NRW commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision, respectively. For more information and some great resources, head to the NRW website.
