NAIDOC Week
Last week Calliope State School celebrated NAIDOC Week. The acronym NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. It celebrates Aboriginal people’s history, culture and achievements and is a great opportunity to learn about their rich culture. It is a time of celebration and connection between all peoples.
Throughout the week, Calliope State School organised several activities for the students to participate in, to gain some knowledge and understanding of the Indigenous culture. We had Deadly Choices attend the school and participate in some great Indigenous games on the oval with all students, Mrs Betts played Edor on the oval with students, Indigenous colouring in, in the hall there was TV showing on the big screen, Aboriginal symbol painting on boomerangs at the HUB, Talking sticks activity in the under croft with Mrs Smith-Ashton and the famous Sean Choolburra – Indigenous Performer from Townsville on Thursday. What a performance this was.
Overall, NAIDOC week was an exciting week where we learnt a lot about the rich Aboriginal culture and tradition! It is always important to honour our traditional custodians of this land and the Calliope State School are grateful for the opportunity to recognise and respect their peoples and culture.
