HEAD OF SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES (HOSES)

Amanda Whale, our Acting HoSES, will continue to work here at Calliope State School throughout Term 3, whilst Kayleen Bishop is seconded to another school. Amanda will continue to be out and about around the school and in classrooms, supporting our students across the school and working closely with our staff. Amanda will also continue to work closely with our parents/carers.

STUDENT WELLBEING CENTRE

The Student Wellbeing Centre being staffed as a place where students can go before school and during the breaks has been a highly successful addition to our school lunch break structure. The Student Wellbeing Centre continues to be a safe, supported, calm space where the students can engage in a variety of structured activities before school and during the breaks. Some children also stay and eat their lunch in this area as well.

STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT

Positive Behaviour for Learning - Tiers of Support

Calliope State School uses Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) as the multi-tiered system of support for discipline in the school.  This is a whole-school approach, used in all classrooms and programs offered through the school, including sporting activities and excursions.

PBL is an evidence-based framework used to:

  • analyse and improve student behaviour and learning outcomes
  • ensure that only evidence-based practices are used correctly by teachers to support students
  • continually support staff members to maintain consistent school and classroom improvement practices.

At Calliope State School we believe discipline is about more than punishment.  It is a word that reflects our belief that student behaviour is a part of the overall teaching and learning approach in our school.  Our staff take responsibility for making their expectations clear, for providing supportive instruction about how to meet these expectations and strive to use behavioural incidents as opportunities to re-teach.

The development of the Calliope State School Student Code of Conduct is an opportunity to explain the PBL framework with parents and students, and gain their support to implement a consistent approach to teaching behaviour.  The language and expectations of PBL can be used in any environment, including the home setting for students.  Doing everything we can do to set students up for success is a shared goal of every parent and school staff member.

PBL Expectations

Our staff are committed to delivering a high quality of education for every student, and believe all adults in the school, whether visiting or working, should meet the same Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) expectations in place for students, being Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

Students

Below are examples of what these PBL expectations look like for students across the school.  In addition, each classroom will have their own set of examples to help students and visitors understand the expectations and meet the standards we hold for everyone at Calliope State School.

Safe:

  • walking on the concrete;
  • keeping hands and feet to self;
  • sitting with all four chair legs on the ground at all times;
  • using school materials appropriately;
  • using Talk, Walk, Squawk if there are any playground issues.

Respectful:

  • speaking politely at all times;
  • being on time and prepared for learning;
  • raising our hands to ask a question or speak;
  • following all adult instructions.

Responsible:

  • do your own work;
  • learn from your mistakes;
  • hand in items you find to the teacher;
  • be honest.

Parents and Staff

The tables below explain the PBL expectations for parents and the standards we commit to as staff:

LUNCH BREAK SURVEY

We thank the parents and staff who completed the Lunch Break Survey. We had approximately 12.5% of parents respond to the Lunch Break Survey and 5% of staff. Our next step is to gather ‘student voice’ early Term 3. We will review with our students their understanding of the current Lunch Break structure and what their preference would be moving forward. I will continue to keep you informed.

COOL WEATHER

Now that it is officially winter and the weather has cooled down there a few things:

  • We have had an influx of non-school jumpers. Please ensure that your child/ren have a school jumper or a plain blue jumper. Hoodies are not to be worn over the head.
  • The days will warm up and jumpers will come off - please make sure you name every item (First and Last name) so that lost items can be returned.
  • The amount of Lost Property grows - if you are missing an item, please check the Lost Property basket outside the office.
