EVERY STUDENT INCLUDED

Student Wellbeing Centre

It has been fantastic to observe the enthusiasm of the students entering the Student Wellbeing Centre in the mornings and throughout the lunch breaks. They are thoroughly enjoying being able to interact in the activities that are on offer each day. At the Leadership Team Meeting this morning we started to think about how we can expand this opportunity to allow more children access to engaging activities throughout their playtime.

Head of Special Education Services (HoSES)

Kayleen Bishop, our HoSES, applied for and was successful in gaining the position of Deputy Principal (Special Education) at Gladstone West SS for the remainder of the term. This is an exciting role for Kayleen and as much as it will be a tremendous loss for us here at our Calliope State School whilst she is away, the experience of being in another school and learning their structures and processes will be an invaluable for Kayleen.

We are currently undergoing a recruitment process to backfill Kayleen and will keep our families informed as this process progresses.

Learning Expectations

It is our expectation here at Calliope State School that every student is responsible for helping to maintain a safe, respectful, responsible and educationally focused learning environment. Students are expected to:

  • Attend school every day and be on time for every class.
  • Resolve differences with others in a positive way, seek adult support to do so.
  • Respect school property and the property of others.
  • Respect fellow students and all school staff members.
  • Comply with the Calliope State School Student Code of Conduct

Students at Calliope State School are expected to be in classrooms, learning. If they choose to exit the classroom, they are supported by either the Hub or Student Wellbeing Team to return to class and engage in learning promptly. If support is needed for a student to engage in the classroom, the Hub or a Student Wellbeing Team will work with the student, together with the teacher, in the classroom.

Feedback Survey - Lunch Breaks

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/HKNWNPQ

As a school, we are seeking feedback from the school community about the structure of our Lunch Breaks.

Currently First Break runs from 11am to 11:45am. The students play for the first 30 minutes and then they have 15 minutes to sit and eat their lunch before returning to class. All students do have the option to eat in a supervised, designated area during the 30 minutes playtime if they choose.

Second Break runs from 1:15pm to 1:45pm. Prep to Year 2 have 15 minutes of play and then sit for 15 minutes to eat their lunch. Year 3 to Year 6 have 30 minutes of play with the option of eating for the last 15 minutes in a supervised, designated area if they choose.

Positive Behaviour for Learning data has been used to drive the decision about allocating play time before eating time. Prior to changing the lunch breaks to their current structure, there were a lot of Red Card, Tier 3 behaviours (office referrals) being demonstrated in the transition from the oval to the designated line up areas as well as on the way to class often as a result of students still being in a heightened state after play. These behaviours have significantly decreased by allowing the students time to eat and sit and eat in a calm environment, prior to returning to the classroom. The students are ‘fuelled’ ready to learn.

EVERY TEACHER EXCELLING

Learning Walls

We are now half way through the term and the Learning Walls, developed collaboratively by teachers and students, are definitely reflecting the learning journey happening in classrooms.  The samples of work on the Learning Walls here at Calliope State School, are a great source of information for the students when reviewing and reflecting on the knowledge, understanding and skills they have focused on as a part of the unit of work being taught. Students in many classrooms are interacting with the learning wall when they are working on their everyday tasks in class as well as when completing their assessment tasks. The Learning Walls are a great reference point for students as they provide them with resources and samples of work, developed by them, to help support them with the task they are working on.
