School Improvement – Our Upcoming School Review.

“Every student succeeding is the shared vision of Queensland state schools. This strategy underpins regional and school planning to ensure every student receives the support needed to belong to the school community, engage purposefully in learning and experience academic success.” This is the strategic vision provided by the Department. Here at Calliope State School, we are always working towards strategies that bring this to life. The school mantra of “Together for Student Learning” guides our decision making processes and our policies. Our focus has been on Reading, Wellbeing, Curriculum and Pedagogy. We regularly share information around these at our P&C meeting.

On the 11-13 of November we will welcome our School Review Team from the Education Improvement Branch. Our P&C will have to opportunity to talk with our review team. Our review team will also visit the front of the school to engage with our parents at pick up time some afternoons. We value the opportunity for you to discuss our school with our review team. Please don’t feel alarmed if one of our review team approaches you at pick up time!

Principles of Positive Behaviour Support – Underpinning our Student Code of Conduct.

PBL is based on the principles of positive behaviour support, which are applied at the whole school level. Positive behaviour support places emphasis on the belief that all children can learn. It takes an instructional approach to behaviour, where expected behaviours are explicitly taught and students are acknowledged for meeting expectations. Behaviour problems are seen as behavioural errors, and adults work together to develop strategies which will allow all students to participate and succeed. Another key feature of positive behaviour support is the provision of a continuum of supports and interventions, depending on the needs of groups and individuals. Support is child-centred, involves families and is culturally and contextually appropriate. Students are taught academic and social skills in tandem, including the necessary social-emotional skills needed for school achievement and successful participation in the community. The ultimate goal is for students to become independent, reach their full potential, and lead fulfilled lives. (Taken from our Department website)

This is what underpins the work leading into our Student Code of Conduct. We would like to thank our parents who have engaged in our sessions so far. We are conducting our next session this Thursday at 4pm. If you would like to attend, please book a spot through the office. Our Student Code of Conduct in on track to replace our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students commencing in 2021.

World Teachers’ Day

This Friday we celebrate the amazing teachers of Calliope State School. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated team of staff who regularly give their own time to support activities for our students. The last few weeks have seen our Robotics students and their teachers hard at work on Saturdays. This term has also seen the introduction of extra lunch time activities. The students are responding very well to these. An extra large

to all our staff to go above and beyond.

Feedback Welcome

Calliope State School is committed to ensuring that ‘everyone at Calliope State School is working together to ensure that every day, in every classroom, every student is learning and achieving’. We want to know from our parents, carers and students, what we are doing well, and if there are any areas we can improve on or do differently. You can give feedback at any time to a staff member, coming into the school office, or leaving a message in our Suggestion Box (in the office foyer). Please be respectful when providing feedback.

If you have a complaint we ask that you:

1) Arrange a time to speak with the class teacher as the first point of call.

2) If your concern is regarding the classroom teacher or a staff member, contact the office to speak with a Deputy Principal responsible for your child’s sector.

· Miss Raelene Norris is the P-2 Deputy

· Mrs Naomi Hughes is the 3-6 A/Deputy

· Mrs Rebecca Crapp is the A/Principal.

We ask that you refrain from using social media platforms to comment about issues or incidents involving our school. We have a great school with great students and staff and together we can continue to promote our school as a fantastic learning venue in our community. By following the above process we can work together to ensure any concerns you have are addressed in a proactive and solution focused way.

A Message from our Police:

We have had several complaints in relation to vehicles driving along the pathway to get to a parking spot near the school. These vehicles are entering via the driveway of the St. Patricks Catholic Church opposite Lightning Street and driving directly on the footpath towards the school to park on the grassy area near the crossing.

This footpath is used by many people, especially throughout the morning and afternoon.

We will be stepping up daily patrols throughout the area to address this issue. Transport and Main Roads are also going to be sending Road Safety Officers at random intervals to enforce council parking rules.

The current penalties which are likely to be enforced by Police are:

Code 2291 -s.288(1) Drive on path other an permitted - $80

Code 2292 -s.288(4) Drive on path fail to give way to other path user - $311

Code 2294 -s.289(2) Drive on nature strip fail to give way to other path user - $311

We are aware that parking is an issue, but driving along the pedestrian footpath, especially while people are using that footpath, is far from the best sol
